On another thread the subject of a single shot, adult-sized .22 was asked. Although I own my fair share of .22's, I had the chance to pick up a Savage MKI GY for a good price and have come to like it quite a bit. It is a Spartan rifle, but is accurate, reliable and fun.

I love to go for walks in the desert stalking jack rabbits to practice skills for big game hunting and to just enjoy the solitude offered by the desert. The Savage has become one of my favorite rifles for these outings.

Although the weather has been horrible, I needed to get out of the city and get some fresh air so I headed up to the desert. I brought the savage with me and took a stroll this afternoon. Before I left my truck, I set up a small game target and did some shooting.

I shot the target at 15, 30, and 45 yds. The 1st picture shows the groups at 15 and 30 yards. I aimed for the head at 15 yards and the center of the body at 30 and 45 yards. The second picture shows all 3 groups with The bottom group being shot at 45 yards. There is a noticeable drop between 30 and 45 yards. I shot 5 rounds per group and was able to get 15 hits. The 1st group was fired from the standing position using the sling and the next 2 were fired from the seated position using the sling. I was using Remington golden bullets for target shooting. It would appear that the Savage is more than accurate for rabbit hunting at reasonable ranges with the stock sights. I had no misfires and all of my rounds ejected clear from the rifle. All in all I shot about 100 rounds today and enjoyed the slower pace enforced by the single shot rifle.

After I was done With my walk I tried to get some pictures of the rifle. It was still extremely windy and raining on and off so not the greatest pictures. Overall the rifle is handsome in a utilitarian way and the fit and finish our more than exceptable for a budget rifle. I did add a metal trigger guard from DIP products which I tried to get in one of the photographs.

I am posting this from my tablet which is very difficult so apologies and advance for any typing errors.

Thanks for the write-up. I’m rehabbing my childhood-era Marlin 25 for my 15-year-old son now but I may just scrap the project and get him one of these. Savage rifles, even the budget ones, always seem to shoot above their weight. I’m glad to know that the quality for the price is there.

I really like this rifle. It is more than accurate for small game and reasonable ranges and is put together well. The Accutrigger is a huge bonus and saves the buyer some money if a trigger upgrade is in the works. I would highly suggest adding a metal trigger guard, but that is about it. Although I enjoy restoring older guns, this is definitely a great gun for the money.
