I found a really nice pre-10, 38spl, 5 screw at a shop today. It locks up fine, has about 70-80% bluing. It has fake bone grips on it right now. They will let me have it for $175.
I wrote down the serial number. Can anyone tell me when it was made? It is S 88502x
Thanks.

It was made about 1947.

$175 is not an unfair price, but it would be a tad high in my area for a 70-80% gun. Frankly, if I liked it, I would probably go the $175.

I got'ta come over to your part of the country and loot it!! In Arizona that gun would fetch $200.00 easy... :D

That's not a bad gunshop price. I see them for $100-$125 on the Internet sites but you have to add shipping and transfer fees (unless you have a C&R) and that can add $30-$60 to the price. If you like it then buy it.

I sometimes feel I need a disclaimer in my sig line....."prices quoted subject to regional variations." or something of the sort.

Everytime I hear about $200+ Model 10s selling briskly around the country, I look for more....

It's not that the $175 price is bad.........like I said, I would likely buy it anyway...... it's just that you can often find them in better condition for that money here. It might take some running around though. For $175, I'd probably still buy it. Even here. It's a five screw and I have the money. For $175, you can't go wrong really.........

That $175.00 junker is undoubtedly one with the pre-war "long" action. The Old Fuff lusts after those because with a litttle work they have a double-action trigger pull that's superior to any S&W that came later, and is known to leave Python owners with misty eyes. And unlike the pre-war guns they have a modern hammer block that makes them unquestionably save to carry with six rounds.

Of course we won't tell anyone else about this...
