My dad gave this to me because he couldn't get it to shoot reloads. This gun (for both of us) shoots 1/2" or better groups at 100 yds using factory Remington corlokt loads. For the life of both of us, it will not shoot better than 1". There must be some sort of magic in the factory loads. I'm about to pull my hair out!

As a brief background, we have been handloading for a very long time and have very good shooting guns.

Thanks!

If you get a pre-64 Model 70 .264 to shoot 1" with reloads?

You don't have a problem.

The old factory load bullet is a two-diameter critter with a groove diameter base and a bore diameter front end that rides the lands.

Nobody makes them for reloading, unless Winchester still does.
I haven't checked.

If you insist and keep on trying, you will burn out the barrel before you find a 1/2" load anyway.

Thats my story and I'm sticking too it!

I've got a semi-custom .264 that shoots about that good with Hornady 129g and 140g Spire Point bullets, IMR 4831 powder. I was able, tweaking the load, to get about 1/2" @ 100 yards. I shot a 4 point bull elk with it @ 325 yards using the 140g bullets, 2 steps and he was DRT. Hope this helps.

Trust in RC always and what do you need it to do under an inch that it can't do at inch

HK,I feel your (and your dad's) pain. I have a couple of rifles that shoot the Remington factory ammo better than anything I have reloaded for them.

I would compare the 2 loads when the shooting distances is further than 100 yards. Sometimes, for whatever reason, group size will improve when shooting distance increases. The load that's shooting 1/2 inch at 100 yards may not group as well as the 1 inch load when you increase the distance to 300 yards.

Thanks for the words of encouragement. Typically I wouldn't worry too much about it, but I know this gun does fantastic with factory loads. I know it doesn't do much good because of proprietary information, but I have even pulled bullets and tried to reverse engineer.

Definitely worried about shooting the barrel out, may have to take RC's advice...

Just an FYI, the Winchester ammo (which also shoots incredible) doesn't appear to have the 2 diameter bullet
