Pre '64 Model 70

Just picked up a Pre '64 Model 70 in 22-250 in about 85-90% condition for $300.00

Beautiful Stock, decent blueing w/ minor surface rust w/ Bushnell 4-14x40 scope.
Anyone out there have any idea what it is worth??
Would it increase or decrease the value to refinish it?

My 10th Anniversary Edition of "Blue Book of Gun Values" is about 8-9 years old so prices would not be up to date. It does not show a pre-64 in 22-250. If orriginal it would be worth more than the standard calibers such as 30-06 & 270 which show one in 80% worth $425 and 90% @ $550.

Refinishing reduces value.

Thanks for the quick response, My plans are to use it as a coyote gun in the truck and keep from beatin up my nice 22-250

Light surface rust is easily removed by soaking the rust in light gun oil. Then, say the rust is on the outside of your barrel, use a round bit screwdriver placed at 90 degree angle to the barrel and rub gently back & forth. Apply oil to float the rust off as it is loosened. Be careful not to get the sharp point or sharp sides of the tip of screwdriver in contact to barrel so as not to scratch the metal. Works better than steel wool which tends to remove all of the rust and bluing. The trick is easy does it.

The pre-64's are great rifles. Enjoy.

There's also a product similar to steel wool but has a much finer surface. It is basically coiled and spiraled steel. I've had one for about 4 years and it's taken every bit of rust off every used gun I've bought including the milsurps.

Brownells has them and I've seen them in many large gun shops.

Congrats on the purchase... sounds like a keeper for sure! I barely missed out on a heavy barrel Model 70 the first year that they offered the 243 Win. I could kick myself for not snatching it up quickly enough. :banghead:

Any serial number larger than 700,000 is 1964 and later.

The post-'63s were just as good for accuracy as the pre-'64s, generally...

Unless I am mistaken there were no 22-250 model 70's made prior to 64. At least my blue book does not show any prior to 64 and later production. It does show them post 64 and later. But I am no expert so you may have an exception too.

You may have a rebarrelled model 70 action which is a fine platform for any rebarrel.

I was looking into a re barrel for a model 70 and could not figure out how to do it for anything less than $500 on top of the price of the rifle!

So if your barrel is good and the work is right you got a pretty good deal.

When I picked up my model 70 I took some 0000 steel wool, soaked it with clp, wetted down the whole gun with clp and then very gently removed the surface rust. Works fine, just don't get too enthusiastic and scratch it

Since the 22-250 was legitimized as a factory loading by Remington after 1964 this is NOT factory, which really doesn't detract from a fine rifle. Winchester had all its eggs in the .225 Win. basket prior to late 60's early 70's.

rust removal

Best way to remove rust without scratching the blueing is to pick up a couple of packages of fine BRONZE wool. Mariners have used it for years to remove corrosion and rust on the chrome and brass on their boats. Put a little oil on the surface and just start rubbing with the wool. The rust will go and best of all the bronze wool does not get rusty if it gets wet for some reason so the fine particle that come off while cleaning the metal won't cause new rust to form.

i know of a shop that has a super grade 220 swift pre 64 action and barrell only (no stock) for 995$ its been sitting a while.. they also have a bull barrell 50's vintage 250-3000 with factory target stock for 2500.. on friday I am picking up a 59 vintage 30-06 thts real nice for 650. i think im getting a steal. they have several other on the used rack in 30gov and 270 for 700-900.. this is PRK though....yours sounds like a potential rebarrell, but as long as its headspaced correctly, whould be an awesome shooter, as you got the scope with it your getting the rifle set up for about 200... im still kicking myself for not jumping on a nice Rem 700 in 25-06 with scope for 395.. the 150 scope on that lightly used rifle brought the price of the gun itself way down.

Took the 22-250 out today and she is a tackdriver!!!

I couldn't be happier, best 3 round group at 100yds was .25" using Winchester 45 grain Hp varmint rounds

I am now confident that I did not get hurt in my purchase
