All I can tell you is that we bought a couple pre-'64 Win M70 rifles in 1999 for less than $500. Now they go over a thousand. If yours cost less than a grand, you got a good deal.

Very pretty rifle, ruben.

The pre '64 is a cult rifle, and the .300 H&H is a cult caliber. Together, they make a a lot of eyes glaze over, mine included. It's worth a lot of money, and I would advise you -- on a practical AND personal level -- not to make any permanent "tactical" modifications. Trying to turn it into a ninja gun would make those glazed eyes turn into rolled eyes, and permanent modifications will severely damage the value.

Were I you, I would leave it as a nice original piece and enjoy it, or would sell it and use the considerable profits to buy something more to your tastes.

HTH!

Actually, ignore the previous posts. The gun is a worn-out old relic and isn't nearly cool enough for your purposes. So I'll give you $500 cash for it, and you can hang on to the scope. :)

Does your rifle have cross bolts in the stock? I can't tell from the photo. I would expect to see two on a H&H magnum. The pre-64 was a control feed action which is preferred for dangerous game if you should find yourself in a non upright position. Great rifle!

The 300 H&H is one of the top two .30 calibers ever designed for hunters, and it won 1000yd competition at Wimbledon off and on for years. It leaves the .30 military cartridge (30/06) in the dirt. And of course is has 100 times the "Classic" appeal as the .300 Win. Mag.

You got a really good looking and valuable rifle and, like other posters, I would suggest not wrecking it with a bunch of "modernizing". Would also suggest rethinking the scope (or scope mounts) you have on it as - in the photo - the scope looks to be mounted overly high and, if that's the case, it will seriously effect the ability to shoot it accurately.

All in all - a very, very cool purchase for sure ! Congratulations !

All I can say is WOW!!!! and that caliber is a true barn burner... and a bit rare to find , in and of itself. i wouldnot touch it to change a thing.... I would def go hunting with it though...

I have a Winchester Pre 64 Mdl 70 in 300 H&H. It was my Dad's. He took Elk Moose, Deer, and Antelope with it for many years.

He got me hooked on the 300 H&H at the age of 14. Mine is a Remington 721. My Dad paid $81.00 for it new and that included a box of shells.
It is the only big game rifle I ever needed. I took Elk, Moose, Deer and Antelope with mine over the years.

300 H&H is a heck of a round, and that old Mdl 70 is a classic rifle. Don't screw it up!!!
