Hello. I tried searching "pre-ban" and "post-ban" here but didn't find anything, so I have to ask, what do these terms mean? I got confused because some manufacturers...

...sell pre and post ban variants.
As I superficially understand it, there was a ban on what some refer to as "assault rifles" a while back, especially in CA, and that ban had expired. So I don't understand why anyone would want a variant that still conformed to those restrictions (except maybe in the event that the ban would be re-enacted or something like that).
And anyway the post-ban / pre-ban label seems to be confusing because I don't know if "post ban" means a rifle that was created to conform with the ban, after it has come into effect, or after the ban had expired.
Help appreciated to clear this muddiness from my head.
