So, do those of you who wish to restrict gun access to these folks also feel they should lose driving privileges? Should surgeons not be allowed to work?

The panicky response from half the members in this thread leads me to believe that some of them would benefit from Prozac. Seriously folks, these aren't magic mind-altering pills. All they do is boost serotonin levels. If you had a friend/family member who killed themselves after taking the drug, it wasn't the drug that made them suicidal. They were simply too depressed to "do anything" about their lives until taking the drug. The increase in serotonin brought them up to a level where they were no longer depressed enough to simply sit by. In essence, the drug made them "happy enough" to kill themselves. That's all. That's what the suicidal effect of anti-depressants are. They don't make you homicidal. They don't lead you to talk to ghosts. The worst side-effects on otherwise "normal" people is that they make you happy. IOW, you'll probably want to, treat people nicer, hug your shooting buddies, get less upset about super-MOA shot groups.

A few thoughts of my own......

My two cents worth,

A few thoughts to add......

First, SSRI's or "selective serotonin re uptake inhibitors" are not anxiolytics (anti-anxiety drugs). Anti-anxiety meds include benzodiazapines (xanax, valium, atavan, or Klonopin), azapirones (buspar), barbiturates (because of their sedative effects) , some antihistamines, and a variety of herbal supplements. Most of these drugs have some sedative effect and it is suggested not to use heavy machinery or drive (or shoot a gun) until you know their effects on you. Their effects are drowsiness, dizzyness, etc.

While SSRI's probably do not change "the chemistry of anxiety" in and of themselves, it is assumed that there is generally an underlying or "masked depression" present with anxiety disorders and that for some people this may be the case. Suicidal or homicidal response while taking SSRI's is rare, but there is a statistical connection, usually in teens.

There are also many non-drug tools like meditation, exercise or many of the alternative therapies which can be highly effective. I use shooting as one way to relax, not because the gun goes bang, but because the focus and breathing required also slows my heart rate, oxygenates the blood, raises serotonin levels and is just plain fun.

Oh yes, when in doubt, the best person to ask about drugs is your local pharmacist.:D

All the best, I feel for you;)

Although I responded with, "ask your doctor". The side effect with some of the drugs out there can be fatal. Suicide is listed as a side effect on many of them, and many younger and older patients have had severe depression caused by the anti depressants. I have an aunt who finally got the right medications after several failed attempts. I know the woman well enough to see that she was "looney" on the pills the last hack gave her. So generalizing like that is not true. Different people are affected differently by the same drug. He should let his doctor decide what is best. Assuming that anti anxiety drugs are also anti depressants. If not then this thread belongs in a medical forum, and not a gun forum.
