I have a chance to buy a 5" stainless 629 and was wondering what they sell for on the used market. The gun in question is several years old but looks new, with the box, and has probably 2 or 3 cylinders fired through it. I appreciate the help guys.

If you mean exactly a 5" barrel, I can't help, it must be rare. In case it was a typo, and you meant 6 or 4 inches, either way about $700 cash.

???????

The 5" 629 was a standard catalog item for decades. In fact I have a 5-inch dash-5 "Classic" sitting in my basement. $700 would be smoken' hot deal in today’s market. The pristine ones I see offered for sale today usually start with a number nine for the first digit.

It is a 5 inch classic. I'm not sure about the dash, but I will have more info soon.

OK change that to "less common". The prices I quoted are what the regular, exc cond, stainless steel, Hogue grip models go for. They are everywhere, from a LGS to Gander Mountain. A $200+ markup for a Classic would be consistent.
The winter of discontent, when everything was gone from the shelves, is well behind. Large bore revolvers are back and in good supply, priced the same as last spring.

I price used guns by seeing what they've SOLD for on the various online auction sites.
I sometimes pay more depending how much I have "the wantsies" and how much of a hassle it might be to find the same/similar gun elsewhere. But for "going rates" you can always look at completed sales on gun*broker, for example. Good luck.

Plus you don't need to burn $$$ of gas money anymore, if you know what you want. The internet changed that. Most up to date prices and supply can also be found on gunbroker and such.

Any S&W dealer should be able to get you a 5" 629, SKU #163636 MSRP $989. It's in the latest (2012) catalog I have and on their website, where I got the MSRP. It's a popular model and looks to have retained the Classic/DX style spring loaded front sight - easily changed without tools. Judge your used price accordingly. Of course, you can't pay too much for a good revolver - and you'll forget it's price soon enough anyway. A turkey, however, you can easily pay too much to obtain. The latest version, I believe, is the 629-6, like my 4" & 6" versions (I don't like full lugs!), resplendent with MIM parts and an IL.

Never pay MSRP. The gun store price should be much less unless there's a weird condition such as the current situation.

5" 629 Price Check

Rare barrel length. Depending on date of manufacture and configuration; and assuming we are talking about a real Smith & Wesson 629 (sans lock), you will see them on the auction sites running anywhere from $800 to $1500.

It is in my possession now. S&W 629-5 5" classic. Great looking gun. There is a barely discernible cylinder ring, other than that it looks perfect.

Good example of why I dont buy new guns(other thread). They dont make them like they used too.

How much did you pay?

I don't know how this is going to turn out. Never posted a pic before. Anyways, here she is.

Congratulations. It looks classy with a full size underlug, and target-friendly for the red insert. Plus you got a better deal at $500. Now the hard part: deciding what kind of 44 ammo to shoot.

Oh, the ammo part is easy. 44 Special for the majority of target shooting. Remington UMC 180's for a giant orange fireball, Speer Gold Dot 44 Magnum (200 grain JHP @1075 FPS) for social work, some 300's for thumpers, and any 240 grain SWC for higher velocity fun.

Those 200 grain Gold Dot Short Barrel loads should be quite nice in your gun.

Wow, $500?? Nice find! Beautiful gun!

Did you use a mask when you robbed the guy????

You stole it, seriously, that is an unimaginable deal in my neck of the woods.

I'm green with envy, congratulations!
