I looked around the internet and found Buds has the S&W m&p 15 Sport 2 for $499 w/ free shipping. Grab A Gun has it for $489. Ruger ar556 is $479 through Grab A Gun. $496 through Buds with free shipping. What bugged me was my lgs has both but for pushing $700. Just like cabelas or gander mountain does. My lgs has had consistently lower prices than big box stores. Now they seem above $ for these supposedly overstocked guns. I've picked up 15 or so firearms from this lgs, all prices were compared in each purchase from various sources, and all significantly lower priced than other competitors. Why are these platforms the only ones above $ at my lgs? I am not internet savvy AT ALL so I buy local vs internet. Is there a link on tips to buy from buds or gunbroker to help me get started with that route? What have you folks seen base S&W and Ruger AR's going for in your area lgs?

With the price wars currently going on, the distributors are offering better deals to us than the dealers. M&P 15s are on the shelf around here for $550-600, and Rugers are nowhere to be found.

I would highly recommend Gallery of Guns gun genie.

Pick your gun.
Put in your Zip.
It gives you a list of local FFLs that are already set up with them and gives you an out the door price.
Put a small down payment online.
Pay the balance when you pick it up.

No savvy needed.

Not to derail the thread, one of the other things I like about it is that the LGS makes a little profit from the gun too and not just a transfer fee.

I have found that even though the online price may be less, by the time you add shipping and transfer fees its pretty much the same or in some cases more expensive than just buying from the LGS to begin with. If you buy local you get to take it home today if you live in a free state too.
ETA I have seen the S&W going from just under $500 to around $550 now and then around here.

Last gun show I went to in Fayetteville NC about 3 months ago they were $400 for either. I went to one last week in Al and S&W were $500. Didn't see any Rugers there.

I very rarely go into a local gun shop anymore. 90% of them want way more for used guns than I can but new plus my local delaers transfer fee online. Most of the recent guns I've bought have been new. The used market just doesn't have that many great deals right now imo.

But my lgs has had consistently lower priced NEW guns vs Buds, Cabelas Academy, Bass Pro etc. Just in this one instance, I cant seem to find these $499.00 s&w sport 2's or Ruger ar556's anywhere in my area. Still around $650 on the several places ive called. Some still pushing 7-8. And im in the woods of Mn. Maybe we haven't caught up yet.

Buy a half dozen lowers when they go on sale. You can build from scratch or but complete rifle kits from Palmetto State Armory and the like and you can be under $600 bucks all day.Catch the right rifle kit sale and you can do one for $400.:thumbup:

CDNN also has the S&W Sport for $500 and I'd rather deal with them than Bud's.

That said, you have no idea how long your dealer has had that particular gun or how much they paid for it.

These big online dealers like Bud's will be the end of your local gun shop. I buy from my local shop every time I can and don't nickel & dime every purchase.

It was about 2 years ago that I tried my first online order. I first used an online FFL finder to locate one in my area. http://grabagun.com/ffl-locator I called the one nearest to me. I told him it would be my first order and asked him how I should go about it. He told me how to do it. I found some guns I wanted at Whittaker Guns. I called them to see if they had my FFL holder information on file. They didn't. I got their email address and gave it to the FFL holder I had called. Once they had his FFL info, they shipped the guns. Tracking status let me know when the guns arrived. I have ordered several times since and have had nothing but good experiences. Most of the time the gun merchant had my FFL license holder info on file, so I didn't have to facilitate the process.

It is ridiculously easy. I have bought guns through Gun Broker, CDNN and Whittaker and never had an issue. If you order through Gun Broker, you may have to initiate the contact after you buy or place the winning bid. I have a Ruger AR556. If I had to do it all over again, I would go with this http://grabagun.com/del-ton-echo-316h-lite-optics-ready-black-223-5-56-nato-16-inch-30rd.html Del-Ton has a very good reputation.

My LGS where I got the $499.00 Sport 2 said no more. The next ones coming in would be much higher. I guess the local protest with BLM guys carrying guns down Broad St has increased demand.
