A monkey was the plate with circular indentations bolted down on a ships deck that held the stacked cannon balls. Since brass expands and contracts much more than iron, now and then it would get so cold as to shrink the brass monkey and the cannon balls would fall out of the form. Cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey.
