Myself and some friends (4 of us total) are responsible shooters. We're looking for some private land to shoot on occasionally. We could probably pay a little if that helps.

We are four guys ages 20 to 26. None of us drink or do drugs of any kind and we are careful.

I personally would really like to practice shooting in prone and sitting positions which we can't do at Eagle Peak or any other range that I've been to.

Please pm me if you know of anything.

Sorry, I can't help you with the private land.

Have you tried Lone Star Gun Range near Lockhart? http://www.ctxpta.com/ It's a lot better than Eagle Peak. I think they've only been open to the public for a year or so.

I've seen people shooting from prone on the rifle range and drawing from holsters on the pistol range. The owner doesn't get upset if you fire more than 1 round every minute either, unlike Eagle Peak.

thanks for the post. I also shoot at eagle peak and dont care for how confined i feel. i want to practice something more like what would happen in real life.

You guys need to check out the Austin Rifle Club located in Manor, TX.

It is a membership only range, but joining isn't difficult. We do require you to attend a Range Orientation class and a Range Safety Evaluation. These are held on the 3rd Saturday of every month. The next is April 19 at 3:00 PM in our education building.

Check out the 'How to Join' section of our web site at http://austinrifleclub.org

BTW - The web site is being renovated and I promise it won't be so crappy in a month or two! :)

The education and calendar links are both kept completely current if you want to check those out as well.

Hope this helps!

I've been looking around for a nice range or land for a while, and the Austin Rifle Club has been suggested several times. I hadn't heard of the one in Lockhart. It sounds like either one would be worth a visit :)

ChickenHawk,

do yall have a pistol range too? How are the rules about drawing from holster? what about shooting multiple targets? Yall are alot closer to me than eagle peak.

Austin Rifle Club is a great range they range has pistol and rifle ranges. The rules can be found on their website as referenced below:

http://www.austinrifleclub.org/index.html

The range is reasonoably close and is well maintained. If you would like to visit just pm me and we will try to set something up.

Primlantah,

OK, I'm forced to admit to you that I don't own a single rifle! :) I am a pistol shooter and have plenty of places to shoot at the Austin Rifle Club.

We have 4 ranges which are excellent for either pistol or rifle.

Our Range 'A' has 25 and 50 yard placements and can be used by pistol and rifle shooters.

Our Range 'B' has movable target frames for shooting any distance up to 15 yards. You can shoot just about anything on 'B' but it is mostly pistol shooters and plinkers.

I spend most of my time on 'D' and 'E' for small bore metal silhouette. ARC also has large bore silhouette but I like shooting small bore. If you have never shot metal silhouette you don't know what fun is!

[shameless plug] ARC has Range Orientation classes on the 3rd Saturday of each month. If you're interested please join us at 3:00 this Saturday! [/shameless plug]

Please feel free to PM me if you have any questions. Or email [email protected]

Cheers,
ChickenHawk

ChickenHawk.... i think you just stole some business from eagle peak. There are some good guys there and i enjoy shooting at their place but Austin Rifle Club sounds like the way to go.

+1 for ARC. Safe, laid back atmosphere, nice people, nice range.

If you ever see a guy there mid-week who looks like he is about 18 years old shooting suppressed guns, stop by and say hello.

+2 for ARC. Sitting and Prone are fine on the 100/200yd range.

ARC is talking about doing some IPSC/IPDA stuff in the future. I believe the "eyebrows" they are putting around Range B are to facilitate this?

damn, the more i hear about ARC the more im interested in shooting there. when i compared reds to eagle peak i thought it couldnt get any better. I think you guys just +1ed my summer.

If my girlfriend and i can make it to the orientation on saturday would we be able to shoot the same day?

EDIT: just read the how to join link... looks like i wont be out there this weekend. Whats the sponsor for and why do i need 2? And why would i have to be voted in after all the PITA involved in joining? Also, why the slow BG check? its not even that big of a pain to buy a pistol. I mean, i understand the orientation and the saftey evaluation... but there is so much bureaucracy and i have enough of that at work.

Sponsors: None are required. That is an old rule and if you read further it mentions that. I believe I mentioned earlier that the web site is being renovated. Those comments will be gone afterwards. Notice that the membership form has nowhere for a sponsor to sign any more.

Voted in: Well, we are a club, and club bylaws say you have to be voted in by the general membership. This is a formality at best. But, it has the positive effect of getting you to at least one general meeting in your life. some people think they are worth attending on a regular basis, but you never know unless you try it once. :)

BG Check: Not needed at all if you have a CHL or are a LEO. Else you can go online to TX DPS and do it yourself for about $4.00. It takes about 5 minutes. Not really so slow! The URL is on the membership form.

Actually the eyebrows on 'B' are strictly a safety improvement.

We're hoping to acquire additional adjacent land to build several 'B' sized ranges for IDPA and training ranges.

Another alternative is adding a range behind 'E' (there is a large patch of land beyond the 100 meter backstop) or behind 'A' .

One way or the other our goal is to do one or more of these things in 2008.

Cheers,
ChickenHawk
