I have a Remington 742 Woodsman 30-06 and I know they are known for jamming but mine does not. The problem is that it cycles the brass but it seems that the bolt carrier doesn't go far back enough to pull back the hammer. So basically, it shoots and cycles on the first shot but then I have to pull the bolt back manually as a live round ejects and a new one is chambered. Any help is appreciated.

The most common problem with these guns is a carbon fouled or rusty chamber, as they very seldom get cleaned properly.

I would run a cleaning rod down the barrel, then screw a .40 cal bronze bore brush on it inside the ejection port.

Chuck the cleaning rod in a cordless drill, and using Nitro powder solvent, have your way with it.

Also, push out the two pins holding the trigger assembly in place and pull it out of the receiver.

Clean throughly and lube lightly.

Not every smith can work on a 742. I suggest call Remington and ask for a list of authorized repair shops in your area. Professional repair is strongly suggested.

I too have a 742 in 30/06,it works just fine.
There is a gunsmith in Washington called Bear Creek Guns.Ray Gregg is the gunsmith and remington gave me his email address. If you want I can go find it and post it.
He says the 742 in the original state will hurt itself if used enough. He machines a part that will keep the 742 working as long as you want it to.Can't remember what it is,I will send mine to him next year for the update.
Ray is in his mid 70's and works everyday, truely a master machinest and gunsmith.

Just sent him an E. One of my 742s is doing the same thing-failing to cock on its own. Will try the super cleaning/lubing first. Thanks for the site and info. "Plum neighborly of U", wc
