Problem with used S&W 5906

I currently own seven 3rd gen Smiths, four nines and three forties, and I shoot low left like that with two of the forties, regardless of bullet weight. I haven't figured it out yet, but I'm definitely following this thread waiting for a light-bulb moment.

I think i'll wait to get the extractor replaced for the time being. At least until brownells gets the part back in stock.

Comments? Suggestions? Anything is appreciated.

You might have better luck with Numerich. I did. Don't forget this model is out of production, sometimes parts are in short supply.
The decocker broke on my model 59 (original, no 590anything, just 59) and I couldn't even get one from them and had to go with a 5906 decocker. My 5946 is a bit easier to find parts for.

Numrich sometimes has the parts, but they often charge 3 times a reasonable price.

Just call S&W. I've had no problem getting parts for other guns no longer in production, such as 4043, 4506, and 4006 models. My most recent purchase, from S&W -- a 4506 front sight -- was about 1/3 the price asked by Numrich.

Then, if you can't get it there, go to Numrich. I just checked Numrich on line (www.egunparts.com) and they don't have any 5906 extractors, today, but if they did, they'd be around $28.

If I had just looked at the picture of your latest group without reading any of your prior posts, my first thought would be that you were either shooting from a Weaver grip/stance or that you were tightening the grip of your strong hand as you are pressing the trigger. But neither of those wouldn't explain why other folks shooting it are getting the same result...unless you all shoot the same way.

Have you ever tried this exercise:

1. Print a series of 1" squares, with dots inside, on a sheet of paper. I usually print 4 rows of 3 on a sheet of binder paper.

2. From 5-7 yards, shoot one shot at each dot...aiming exactly at the same spot on each dot...the single shot on each target tells you much more than a cluster of shots

3. If it is the gun, each shot should be in the same spot, in relation to the aiming point on each target

I am cross eye dominant, right handed and left eye dominant by a lot.
Im not the thread starter, but can you elaborate what this does to your shot?

Can't say for others but because of my cross-eye dominance (right hand left eye), I shoot slightly to the left if my sights are from the factory. I don't shoot low, just very slightly to the left. I've adjusted my rear sights by a hair and that keeps impact = aim.

Does this gun need to have rounds cycled from the magazine? Strange... I'll keep that in mind.

so I looks like I need a new extractor and get replacement sights... Never buying a used gun again. Well at least I got a good deal On it...

You've got an accurate and reliable pistol, and it makes you want to avoid used? Why?

And very few pistols appreciate having a round chambered by dropping it into the pistol then letting the slide close over it.

^^ that last signature is the first thing to make me laugh out loud today ^^

I have a 5906 that I absolutely love, but am having grip issues with it: they aren't tight, they slightly shift around especially while shooting, took me a little while to pinpoint the problem. I will be calling S&W in a little while to ask about that. Never even come close to getting 2" or tighter groups with it (though I can achieve that with other guns I own) so after reading some of these posts I'm hoping to get more accuracy out of it once I have that problem resolved. Can anyone tell me if some 5906's came with this pachmayer wrap-around dealy (as seen in photo) from the factory? Pretty sure my uncle who gave me this gun was the first owner.

If someone has fired the gun without cycling rounds from the magazine, that COULD explain why the extractor is chipped... Few semi-autos are made in a way that will allow single rounds to be loaded bypassing the magazine. (Forcing the extractor over a round already in the chamber when closing the slide CAN and often WILL damage the extractor.)

mine came with houge grips already installed and i really like them. If you don't have smaller hands then i'd suggest the houges... they're large but they feel nice. From what i've read, the OEM grips with these guns tended to crack after extended use.

I guess i'm just bitching to bitch. It is a nice gun and i do shoot it consistently enough. I think i'll just get a gunsmith to drift the rear sight a little and call it a day. I love the trigger on the 5906... especially the extremely short reset.

Also.... i'm insanely jealous of your hi-caps. All of us in California don't have the privilege of having real magazines.

We can have them, you just can't buy new ones. I emptied out my bank account buying mags for guns I didn't own before the law took effect

Pachmayr wrap-arounds were never standard from the factory. It is a bit odd that they would shift as the side panels are rubber covered steel inserts and are usually pretty stable on the gun.

I can highly recommend the factory nylon panels (never seen them chip either) if you want thinner or the Hogue panels if you want thicker

Next time you go shooting take some heaver rounds 130 or 147 try them. It should shoot higher. GOOD LUCK That is a very good group.

when the 59 series guns were made 115 gr rounds were all the vogue, with many LE depts using Federal 9BP's that were 115 grs. with purported one shot stops of 95%.

too bad i was 11 when the ban took effect... and I'm not ready to convince an ATF agent I purchased magazines when I was 11. I'll just have to move out of this damned state if I want anything cool. :banghead:

Also, my 5906 have novak three dot combat sights... iLikeOldgunsIlikeNewGuns: What sights are those and are they standard?

Mine also has a rounded trigger guard (which could answer my sights question)... meaning its later production (i think).

Thanks everyone for the grip info and advice, I think I'll opt for the Hogues as I have rather large hands, but I plan to get the factory grips too. 9mmEpiphany, I have no doubt that what you say is true, but they do indeed wiggle and shift somehow, ... but not for long. I'll be trying heavier bullets soon, I've almost always used 118s as they're so common, so I'm eager to see the results after reading recent posts. Gabes220, they are adjustable three-dots, I believe they are factory as I've seen them on several other 5906s.

The fully adjustable sights on the 59xx were an option. The LE guns opt'd for the low profile Novaks. Low profile adjustable sights are still available as aftermarket add-ons. They'll run around $70.

That might just fix my problem... They're not the exact same sights that came with the firearm but they did come in a version of the 5906 so i don't see why that would put me in the ESP class in IDPA. I'm not too familiar with the classification requirements

Should i just have my Novak sights drifted or think about getting adjustables?
