Let me begin by saying, this kid is warped in some way. I also have no problem with the school expelling him or the Marines dropping him, but criminal charges?

CARY, Ill. - Allen Lee was on the verge of realizing a dream to become a Marine after signing enlistment papers this month. But one violent, profanity-laced English essay later, the 18-year-old’s future with the Marine Corps appears to be over.

Because of pending criminal charges stemming from his essay, Lee’s recruiter told him Friday that the Marine Corps has discharged him from his contract, said Sgt. Luis R. Agostini, spokesman for the Marine Corps Recruiting Station Chicago.

“Basically, he is no longer an applicant to become a Marine,” Agostini said.

The senior at suburban Cary-Grove High School was charged this week with two misdemeanor counts of disorderly conduct after the principal turned his creative writing essay over to police.

Prosecutors cite Va. Tech
Lee initially faced just one charge, but an amended complaint filed Thursday cited a second passage.

“In light of recent events (at Virginia Tech), that is part of the context of what happened that makes the reaction all the more reasonable,” said Tom Carroll, first assistant state’s attorney in McHenry County.

Lee, who has a 4.2 grade-point average and never has been in trouble before, is being tutored at administrative offices while school officials decide his future, said his lawyer, Thomas Loizzo.

The charges are a product of paranoia, born of the massacre of 32 students at Virginia Tech by a social outcast who then killed himself, Loizzo said.

“Once the dust settles, once they look at this through clearer glasses, we think that the state will do the right thing and dismiss the charges,” Loizzo said.

The essay, written Monday, reads in part, “Blood, sex and booze. Drugs, drugs, drugs are fun. Stab, stab, stab, stab, stab, s...t...a...b...puke. So I had this dream last night where I went into a building, pulled out two P90s and started shooting everyone, then had sex with the dead bodies. Well, not really, but it would be funny if I did.”

Assignment: ‘Be creative’
The teacher told students: “‘Be creative; there will be no judgment and no censorship,”’ Thomas Loizzo said. “There was never any warning from the teacher that if she determined the paper to be offensive, she would then pass it along to the authorities.”

School district spokesman Jeff Puma declined to discuss the specifics of the essay or Lee’s future, citing privacy concerns.

“The essay was inappropriate in that it caused a question about safety,” Puma said.

The charges could result in a $1,500 fine and as many as 30 days in jail if Lee is convicted.

Vote: Prosecute students for violent writings?

Lee hopes to re-enlist if the charges are cleared and he’s allowed to return to school, said his other attorney, Dane Loizzo.

Lee wrote in a statement provided by his attorney that he has completed military entrance exams, including a psychiatric evaluation.

“If I’m qualified to defend the country, I believe I’m qualified to attend school,” he wrote.

Is any more proof needed that without the 2A, none of the other amendments stand a chance? Once they villify gun ownership, forget about free speech.

So, anyone / thing that causes us to question or doubt our benevolent king shall be banished FORTHWITH from the realm...

This is crap. Everytime something like VT happens, people seem to utterly miss the point in favor of 0 tolerance crap and more PCness.

people get rich making movies, shows, writing books, plays about exactly that. They ain't in trouble... explain that to me.

we're stuck in a weird position as a society (thank you libs!). schools cannot act on these things until the law is broken... but once the law is broken, it usually takes the form of a gun slaughter and the libs whine about no action being taken beforehand. ***?!!?

uhhhhh

come again????
I think he means "shall not be infringed" in the 2nd Amendment, followed by regulation of silencers, full auto, short-barreled long guns, and so forth. Google "national firearms act."

"Prosecute students for violent writings?"

No, but he deserves a swift kick or two for sheer stupidity. He's got a good GPA, but not a lick of common sense. And his writing stinks to boot.

Wow. This guy must be pretty smart.

When I went to college, an A+ did not gain you anything on your GPA, though of course an A- counted you down :(

You can't judge what he wrote without knowing the context ... maybe the words were those of the "bad guy" in the story ...?

Meh. He's in high school, he's bored, he's doing the stupid assignment because he's being made to, and he's taking the teacher's word at being allowed to push limits (and being encouraged to).

Kids do what kids do. Did I ever mention I wrecked my first car by being stupid?

Wow, talk about infringement of 1st amendment rights... I don't think the kid was being stupid; considering the kind of fiction I wrote while in high school I'd call this all pretty tame. What it boils down to now is this Orwellian thought-police, where the mere exhibition of a "socially maladaptive trait" will land you in hot water. He didn't yell "fire" in an auditorium; from all present accounts he simply acted with an individual will. I congratulate him!

While their tacit anti-second amendment stance bothers me to no end, I'm seriously considering giving the ACLU money if they take up this kid's case...

In California high schools when I was there (graduated '89), an A in a college prep course counted for 4 points toward your GPA, but an A in an AP or Honors course counted 5 points.

Make more sense now?

I am willing to bet he pushed them. They pushed back. They can push a lot harder.

Not exactly yelling fire in a theater but still problematic. I bet he will ultimately win but it will be painful getting there. Looking back at my youth I really dread the teen years my boys are heading into.

Or he could just be nuts....

I don't see why everyone is pitying the kid. Sure, the next year will be tough, but he will make a good chunk off the lawsuit.

The settlement he'll get from the district will pay for college and then some when it all settles down. The Marine thing isn't a big deal. Even if he ends up convicted, which he won't, the case will be closed. They won't let anyone in who has any kind of pending charges - even speeding tickets.

Hell--The Marines turned me away for having asthma and then suggested that I go to the Army recruiter and lie about it. They'll work him in either way.

sounds like a perfect guy for the US Military... young and ambitious enough to shock people.

That's all that essay was, just a shocker to someone who asked him to push the envelope, that's all. If he was flying a jet fighter and got all super crazy creative, they'd praise him. When you're writing an essay though that's graded on it's creativity, you're turned over to authorities for being too creative or 'out of the box'.

She should have consulted the man before turning him in. "why do you write like this?" "you said to push the limits" "would you kill your classmates" "no, says right there, 'not really but it'd be cool' I have violent tendencies, I'm joing the marines because it's the perfect job for me. If you go back on your word and start censoring this essay then you'll ruin my career."

of course, the conversation above was completely imaginary... kinda like this young man's fantasy about necrophilia, but it's enough that people take it to be true.

My advice to Allen, stick to historical biography. Forget creative writing. Too much boneheaded extrapolation.
Write like a lawyer. Stay out of trouble. Zoning and Variances, that's where it's at.

Arlo Guthrie said:
And I went up there, I said, "Shrink, I want to kill. I mean, I wanna, I
wanna kill. Kill. I wanna, I wanna see, I wanna see blood and gore and
guts and veins in my teeth. Eat dead burnt bodies. I mean kill, Kill,
KILL, KILL." And I started jumpin up and down yelling, "KILL, KILL," and
he started jumpin up and down with me and we was both jumping up and down
yelling, "KILL, KILL." And the sargent came over, pinned a medal on me,
sent me down the hall, said, "You're our boy."

Proof - Constitution is no longer valid

Not necessarily.

These types of behaviors often occur under stress or when the ordered reality of a culture or group is disrupted
