I'm planning to purchase my first 1911 pistol soon. I've come across a couple of decent deals -- a stainless Para SSP and a Springfield G.I. There's about a $130 difference from the SSP to the GI.

Can anyone give me pros and cons on the two pistols? The SSP sure looks pretty, but I've read a lot of good things about Springfields...

ETA: I've also come across a good deal on the Para Super Hawg, but I just don't like the looks of it -- it's one of the matte black models.

The Springfield is a Springfield. If I were going to buy a loaded 1911 it would be the Springfield TRP. But, that will run you about 1300 dollars. I bought an SSP for cheap and put an ambi thumb safety on it along with nite sites. I love the gun and cannot complain. It shoots like a dream. Some of the old timers will tell you its not a real 1911. But, who cares. It is almost the same. The ramp is part of the barrel on the SSP and it is part of the frame on other 1911's thats about the only difference. SSP all the way!

i have been impressed with the para 1911's i have used over the years, with that said, i own a sa 1911, with 4k rds through it, it isn't a gi, but it is a great gun. the gi's that i have shot have been very accurate, and reliable .
