Questions for those who have a PTR and use it.

Does steel case wear it out any faster than brass?

What is it average grouping with wolf or brown bear at 100yds and beyond?

Whats is its grouping with good brass factory ammo at 100yds and beyond

How many rounds of brown bear or wolf can you put in it before it gets too dirty and must be cleaned to work?

What parts are most likely to wear out first and at how many rounds?

How easy is it to clean it in the field?

Does it take any tools for a simple take down to clean it?

The rifle is as simple as a Kalashnikov for take down and cleaning.

My PTR is an older JLD rifle, and shooting handloads at 100 yards I can keep 4 rounds in just over an inch with the iron sights.

It easily accepts the claw mount and an optic with a short tube.

I find that it is easy to clean, just wipe down the bolt and carrier, and swab down the insides of the receiver, take a wet patch to the trunnion and clean the bore as usual.

I like mine.

Probably, just because steel is harder than brass. But I seriously doubt it'll make a significant difference.

What is it average grouping with wolf or brown bear at 100yds and beyond?

From a bipod on a bench, about 2-4 inches.

How many rounds of brown bear or wolf can you put in it before it gets too dirty and must be cleaned to work?

Brown bear's pretty dirty stuff. 5k rounds will leave a buildup of black crud almost a millimeter thick... but it still seems to work at that point, unless you get a bad magazine.

How easy is it to clean it in the field?

I'd say it isn't quite as easy as an AK or AR, just because the push pins come completely out and can be lost if you're actually in the field. Also, the insides of the receiver get a lot dirtier than an AK, so it does take a bit longer to clean.

Does it take any tools for a simple take down to clean it?

No... not unless you accidentally push the bolt back into the carrier and lock it when it's out of the rifle. At that point you'll need either channel locks, or a vice to push the rollers back in and unlock the bolt. The bolt assembly won't fit back into the receiver if the rollers are cammed out.

Does it do fine with surplus G3 mags?
What mags should you use or not use in it?

5k rounds? Sounds nice, of course I would never let it go that far between cleanings but it is nice to know what a guns limits are.

I use the 99cent 20rd aluminum magazines from CheaperThanDirt. I have at least 30 of them. Two or three of them turned out to be bad, but at a buck a piece, who cares?

Some people say the steel 20 rounders are better, but I've never found that to be true. I would recommend you stay away from 30 rounders though. They're finnicky, unreliable, and they don't fit in magazine pouches anyway.

I also have one of those Alliance 50 round drums. It works great, but it's a pretty ridiculous price. If I didn't collect drum magazines, I'd pass on it.

rx-178: Is that scope long enough to interfere with the charging handle in the hold open notch?

It doesn't interfere with the latch locking into place, it just makes the HK slap a little harder to do.

I've got my paddle magazine release here, just not installed. I'm just waiting for my HK USP meprolight sights to arrive, so I can have Bill Springfield do the whole thing in one package. Trigger job, paddle release, and sight install for the pistol.
