PTR-91 Questions

What's the point of the "pinning" then? Just aesthetics?

Pretty much, probably just as many have C&P SEF frames just for the G3 look as those who just like the contoured grip.

Doesn't the real G3 come with both a paddle magazine release AND the push button? If so, why does the real one have both?

Yep, you'd have to ask Hk, though it worked out in their favor(and against ours) for importing.

Thank ttarp!

I'm looking for that classic G3A3 look as well, so am looking for a pinned and clipped lower and green pistol grip to go with it, plus the shorter selector switch as my navy selector won't work.

If it isn't broken, don't fix it. What I'd really like to know is what engineer at CEAM or CETME reversed the direction of the button release. On the CETME/G3's progenitor, the Stg.45(M), the button was on the left side to be pressed by the thumb of the hand removing the magazine, just like on the StG.44 or MP.38.

That and the paddle was removed as per ATF regulations. The pin the paddle was on was deemed integral for automatic fire. I suppose it's more a question of why isn't the paddle on the PTR than why is it and the button on the G3/HK91.

Yes, obviously a paddle release can be legally installed... I'm not sure why PTR doesn't do it at the factory. I can't get ahold of Bill Springfield, every time I call him it goes straight to voicemail and he hasn't answered by voicemail message or emails so I'm not sure what's going on.

Bill will get back to you. He is a small independent business - it's possible he's on vacation. Give it some time. He doesn't amazing work on trigger packs and the installation of paddle mag releases is second to none.

Okay cool I will wait. :)

I'm going to build this rifle up as I go, but in the meantime it'll be nice just to have it in my hands on Monday... my God, I can't wait!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

They are a great rifle! I hope you really enjoy it. When you're trying to buy mags, look for steel HK91/G3 mags instead of aluminum. The difference is easily discernable.

Spend some time on a known 100 yard rifle with the battle sights on it and report back to us.

Wow that's quite a deal, under $4 is still hard to beat!

Are the aluminum ones good to go? I like the way they look better for some reason.

The aluminum mags work, you just have to take a little more care rocking them in than you do with the steel G3 mags. Alternatively, you can get steel CETME mags and use them. They'll work equally well, if not better.

Thanks! I think I'll actually order BOTH, I'll get a half dozen steel mags and maybe a dozen of the aluminum ones.

Before you buy a whole bunch of ZQI make sure it will feed and fire reliably.

A guy at my range the other day had his brand new G3 and a case of Aguila .308. Would fire the first round then stove pipe the second, over and over. Saw his frustration and gave him some Winchester white box and it ate every one.

Lots of good advise here ... I was going to chime in on a couple things but they've already been addressed by others ... The only 2 bits of advise I can offer

1. email Bill he always got right back to me within 24 hours that way.

2. When the HK bug bites sometimes it bites hard, enter the HK world with caution ;)

Enjoy your new rifle ... BTW, as you get older you might like the HK-93 clone (.223) or the HK-32 (7.62x39) just as well ... still fun to shoot with less recoil. Until that time you might like the 2-stage recoil buffer and / or the club-foot stock.

These are just the SBR's ...

I think most complaints about recoil come from Cetme shooters. My new PTR is a pussycat. Felt recoil feels like an SKS. Now I added a 2 stage heavy buffer and it feels more like an AK in the recoil department. It doesnt have a sharp impulse like most other .308s, it has a linear push. Instead of a smack, its a shove.

Well I emailed Bill Springfield on Monday, hasn't responded all week. I also called him Tuesday and left a voicemail (went straight to voicemail) so I'm not sure what's up.

I am in the same boat as the OP, and I wanted to know if anyone had a place that had the steel, cut & pinned lower receivers for the semi-auto PTR-91 in stock.

Every place I see has them sold out.

It sucks when you can 't find the parts you want when you want them but HKParts.net and RTG parts both have the option to "notify you" when they come back into stock ... I've had to use that feature a couple times; most recently for HK-51 hand-guards and it works well on both sites

UPDATE:

Okay guys, here is my rifle now:

6_zefc_Hjd_Dthelvb_Bwo6f_SR_W1_u8w4_FK7qyk_KAJd_JU.jpg

I added a steel HK lower and a German made leather G3 sling. Just awesome!!!

I've since fired the gun 100 times at the range, with ZQ 147 grain 7.62x51mm NATO rounds, with perfect reliability. Recoil is easily manageable, reminds me of my old SKS but with a lot more horsepower behind it. One thing though, the skinny factory handguards got really hot while shooting, which is a common complaint against them. I have since bought an HK factory wide handguard and it should arrive later this week. The wide style handguards are said to handle heat much better than the slim version. I also have an HK 3-point sling coming, should make carrying this rifle much easier.

I'm going to get this rifle off to Bill Springfield this weekend, to install a paddle magazine release. So far, I LOVE this rifle and am glad I chose it over some other options out there. It's my go-to main battle rifle (MBR) and will be my primary defensive long gun.

I'll keep everyone updated!! :D

UPDATE:

I got the wide handguards in today, they are PERFECT!!! I also shipped out the rifle to Bill Springfield today as well, after first checking if my new handguards fit (they did).

He is going to install a paddle magazine release and snug up my lower, as it slides back and forth a bit right now. I absolutely cannot wait to get the gun back!!!

Jestik: I got my lower from a fellow member here for a good price. No place else had any in stock.

Cool. Your rifle looks awesome. I wish you the best of luck in getting it exactly as you want it.

You're at where I want to be in terms of this rifle.
