Pulled over in non-gun friendly state?

I didn't think we were discussing illegal actions at first, but I do see how the first post is a bit ambiguous.

If the friend is worried that he'll be hassled even though he's in compliance with FOPA'86, then the "no consent to searches" strategy is probably his best bet.

If he's worried because he likes to carry a loaded gun at the ready even when it isn't legal, that's another issue. He still has 4th Amendment rights, but he's at much greater risk as he can't fall back on FOPA's protections.

Let me attest to this as it happened to me in Medina, Ohio of last year. The police will cover their own collective butts! Medina county sherriffs office not only lost the dash cam footage, my 911 call recording, but the city prosecutor also threatened me with going to jail, for defending myself!

Now luckily I hired a former prosecutor as my defense lawyer, and I got it resolved in time to start a new job here in Colorado. I was lucky I had $$ or I would have been taken advantage of by the locals, and yes they totally ignored my CCW.

Put the gun in a locked container in your trunk. Don't consent to a search. Don't travel in liberal states unless you really must, because you are in effect surrendering your civil liberties when you do so.

When I go to the lower 48 I'm usually (for convenience) flying through LA. I rent a car and get out of CA as quickly as possible. I won't vacation there, I won't spend money there, I won't even stop for the night at a hotel till I cross the NV or AZ state line. I don't ever travel east of the Mississippi nor can I imagine doing so, except possibly the south if I had a good reason.

In some ways I think of the lower 48 as an alien country. There are areas which you wouldn't want to visit because of lack of scenery, attractions, crowds, whatever. But, the gun thing has become an increasingly important option in my decisions. Over the last ten years I've pretty much limited myself to the SW and mountain states which recognize my Alaska permit.
