If the cops and a prosecutor asks why you have a skull on your pistol grips just tell 'em you likes you some Halloween candy.

You're probably kidding but just more for emphasis, they won't ask why. And the prosecutor doesn't even have to say a word about it. Just make sure it's nice and visible to the jury ...

People judge other people sometime by the simplest of actions or what they wear. That is just human nature. Their judgments may not be reality, but first impressions count.

I was selected as a jury member in a civil case. I won't go into the details other than it involved a death of a teenager. For the most part the evidence and history of the teenager's past, logical conclusions were totally ignored. Emotion ruled due to the death of the teenager and was the focus of all the women on the jury and a few of the men. Even though all the evidence presented left no doubt that the teenager caused his own death, the majority wanted to find for the plaintiff. Luckily the trial ended in a hung jury. When you get the emotional snowflake types on a jury how do you think they will react when they see an evil black gun with a skull engraved on it? Regardless of what you believe, it is a moot point, only what the jury thinks means anything.

The thrust of my statements was that it's not useful to wear images or statements on your clothes, guns or body, that encourage or imply violence or a careless attitude to the lives of others. It's useful to think it through beforehand.

I also think it's possible to overthink this.

A Grateful Dead skull means you're a fan of the band. A Day of the Dead skull implies a celebration and a remembrance of those past.

A rule of thumb may be: If I can't explain this without sounding like a jerk, a nutjob or a professor of obscure philosophies, then maybe I ought not wear it or engrave it on my carry piece. This though means that you're not a horse's rear end to begin with. If you are then, as always, you're on your own.
