Well I'm picking up a factory post 64 m70 synthetic stock and seeing what it takes to fit my pre-64 barreled action in it. Think the stock is from the 90s or 2000s, know it was off a stainless 300 mag and says us repeating arms. From what I gather I need to oval out the rear action screw hole a bit and there will be a gap somewhere underneath because the bottom metal is a little different. I figure drill out the rear hole and piller it and use some devcon for the bottom metal, maybe camo the stock to cover any filler. I'm still working on getting the floorplate and follower I need.

Cdnn just advertised a pile of m70 stock parts including bottom metal stuff.

Looking forward to seeing your project progress

I think you can shorten the post 64 2 piece bottom but don't think there's a way to make the one piece fit a pre-64. Not much info out there m70 guys only like using original parts and most would think your crazy using synthetic, but if it gets the gun running and I don't have to worry about a valuable walnut stock I'm OK with it. Think most I seen at cdnn were short or super shorts, I'll have take another look tho.

Yeah your right i think all of the bits i was looking at were short

Some post 64's used 2 piece bottom metal, some use 1 piece bottom metal. The pre-64's are a 3rd design that is different from either. I've never tried to restock one of those, but it is going to be a little more difficult if even possible.

Most aftermarket stocks being sold today are designed for 1 piece bottom metal. They can be made to work with 2 piece bottom metal if you use 2 flat washers between the bottom metal and stock on the action screw behind the trigger guard. There will also be a small opening where the bottom metal does not completely cover the cut out in the stock. It is purely cosmetic and won't affect function.

They also sell a plastic adapter that can be used instead of 2 flat washers.

And a lot of guys opt for aftermarket 1 piece bottom metal; that is what I eventually did. I used 2 washers temporarily until I could get the correct bottom metal.

Will the 1 piece bottom even work with a pre-64, the action screw holes aren't the same between.

Pre64.com is offering me $275 for my front sight, so that will pay for the parts I need to get this m70 out hunting again. Pretty much 100% now this was a super grade, it's to beat up and would need bluing and all the replacement sg parts so now it will be just a standard rifle, tho I think I will still call it a super grade. To bad winchester never marked the actions as a sg. Hope down the road I can find a nice original standard stock for when it gets rebarreled but it will never be a pretty gun just a work horse.
