I have a shot at a Ted Williams model 53 30-06 for a pretty reasonable price. The wood is beat up, but the metal seems to be in fair shape. Stocks from Boyds are cheap enough and nice enough that I am not overly concerned there. Before acquiring the rifle I will remove the action and inspect the metal portion. The rifle does have a cheap stock installed which means that it does have model 70 scope mounts installed. What, if anything specifically, do I need to look at on model 70 post 64 rifles?

the post 63 barrels and actions are just as good as the pre 64 guns. the biggest problem with the post 63s is the poor stock and the poor stock fit. i'd just check out the metal work like any other used rifle: smooth bolt action, no pits in bore, trigger function, no crown dings, etc.

post 63s can be tackdrivers with the right stock fit.

luck,

My pawn house special looks like a dog, but it will print sub moa! When i rescued it from the pawn shop, i even showed the owner how bad the rifling looked. I myself wasn't even sure if it would shoot. But I already had plans for it if it didnt. I was trying to drive the price down.
I'll call it my $180 sleeper! Good luck, I love mine!
