I am thinking about putting a reflex sight on my Ruger Redhawk 44 Magnum. When I mentioned this to a friend they said putting that junk on there would ruin it......

Not the first time I have seen that kind of hating. What's so wrong with that?

Its not a carry weapon and I find reflex sight gets me on target much better.

Nothing's wrong with it. I like a red dot or 2x scope on my hunting revolvers.

ruin the gun or the sight? i dont think the sight will fail. appearance wise if it makes you use the gun better then i would put it on.
you'll get more enjoyment out of it.

i only have irons on mine but i think a scoped srh looks cool. how will you mount the red dot? there's a difference in the level of the frame for scope mounts assumiing your not using tube style red dots.

I ordered a weigand rail that mounts where the iron sights attach, then a reflex sight made for picatinny rail can mount on it.

If it makes things easier for you and that leads to more enjoyment, then go for it.

My super red hawk looks just like the top on Craig posted. It has taken many deer out to 100 yards.

20161129_121625.jpg I used to be one of those haters. Only the classic configuration would suit me.
Then it happened.....i turned 50. The eyes aren't as sharp as they once were. It dawned on me that not everyone had been blessed with perfect vision like I had.
Now I like reflex sights. Shoot with both eyes open like I used to with irons. ..only better.
Get whatever floats your boat. The haters will hate until they wise up.

because I have the older 1979 version of the regular redhawk, and did not want to drill and tap, I opted for the full length rail that screws on where the sights are normally.

I am impressed with Weigand's stuff - pic of a mount on my S&W 460.

As far as "putting junk on there"....hmm, don't put cheap stuff, put what will hold up - Weigand's stuff will IMO.

I like the JP Rifles JPoint sight base for Ruger revolvers. Use a Docter Adapter [sic] to convert it to Burris FastFire or an Arredondo adapter to convert to a Trijicon RMR. For Bushnell TRS, I use a Weigand micro rail, for Ultradot's, I use full Weigand rails. I used to use Burris Ruger adapter mounts for SRH's, since it lets me leave the irons in place, but I prefer the JP rifles mount.

I got it on for now, but need to tighten the mount on the reflex sight. Going to be a week or so before I can get to the range again and zero it, This will do the trick nicely. Not the most gracefull looking arrangement, but it will work.

If it improves performance, especially for those shooters for whom the iron sights have become difficult to achieve a clear sight picture with, I would not hesitate.
