Python

Jeff,

All you have to do to stop a Colt v. Smith argument is to post a few of your pictures. That's the only reply that's needed to those arguments. I've yet to see anyone make a point better! :D

Don't get all touchy and grouchy on me, I was responding to the post before mine...

" S&W makes great guns, but they did not have the same amount of labor put into them as Pythons."

Some of them did, or at least came very close at one time.

Now if I could just find that picture of the Python with the upside down lettering on the barrel we could all have a good laugh. :)

Or I could mention my father's 1990 6" blue Python that had to go back to have the barrel screwed on straight to get the front sight to point up. It wasn't far off center, but it was noticed by everyone who looked at it. That'll teach him to order a gun.

I do love Pythons, but they were made by humans.

John

I don't much about these things yet but I have to say, Double Action that top picture.........

Those are absolutely stunning! What a finish!

I'm not all touchy & grouchy, I was just hittin' an easy target.

Good thing you brought those Python errors up, because I was going to point out that S&W never made a mistake.

Oh wait, there was that one time that S&W put the wrong cylinder in a model 27 and shipped it. Oh wait, there was that one time that S&W did a recall on ALL 460XVR wheel guns, oh wait, there was that time when they did a recall on all model 686's......
Don't get me wrong, I like my S&W wheel guns too, but don't make it sound like Colt is the only gun company that's made an error.:D

Now, back to the subject at hand.
The Colt Python....

The cylinders turn the wrong way, too.

The local gun store has a S&W Performance Center gunsmith in once a year and you can take one gun in for a little tune-up or advice and maybe a free part if you need one. The guy in front of me had this big honking .44 Magnum that he said was spitting lead and had been for years. Oops, no forcing cone. I bet it spit.

And I wonder if it's too late to trade in the Model 647 my father bought, the .17 HMR with the 8-3/8" bbl. It seems to be okay, but I've heard of other owners getting a credit on a different model because they won't shoot and they won't work on them. Seems a shame to dump it after the wonderful trigger job I did for him. Oh well.

Pythons...

I still need a nickel Python to go with a set of type 2 stocks, but they cost too much. Boohoo, woe is me. I think I'll buy my first Glock to protest. Just kidding.

John

From the first time you posted that pic I've wanted an engraved shooter-grade Python like that one. One with first rate quality engraving, not some homemade job done by a guy with talent using a sharp nail.

I'd spend the money for something exceptional. And I don't need a box either.

John

John, you're more like me than I knew.
I'm always buying great lookin' grips/stocks, then I end up looking for the perfect gun to go with 'em. Kinda bass akwards.

Now, more shooter grade Colts....

It's because of your pics that I don't regularly look at the auctions anymore - I'd be tempted to spring for one of those beauties. Aw, what the heck, I just signed up for a new equity line of credit and I'm waiting on the checks to arrive. I was almost hoping they'd turn me down, but they called back with the approval in 51 minutes.

I've been thinking for 6 months or so that I should buy a USFA Pre-War and 12/22 to shoot, but after further review I should just go ahead and get what I really want. Right? Right.

Speaking of spare parts, I have an extra set of nice shooter-grade type 3 stocks too, but with a blue screw and not nickel like the type 2's.

I'll exit by quoting my father when I told him what unlabeled Python boxes were selling for on GB - "Sell it." I'm not related to any collectors that I know of.

John

Wow.. I never expected to get all this information after my "newbie" post. I'm was going to trade or sell this piece but after this exchange I think I'll just go shoot the beast. Thanks to all...O and though I like a S&W I'm not sure I have one that can compare to the colt.....Thanks again.

i love the colt python i group up shooting it. i have a colt python in 6 inch barrel, my grandpa used it in vietnam. all i know was he would rather shoot that thing than his rifle.
lots of dead VC and NV to that pistol, its got a history. i would neer sell that gun in my life. the only mod i would think about is a new barrel and save the old but it just isnt the same to me.

There is a reason I included my S&W 27-2 in a picture with my Python.

Once there was time when S&W referred to this revolver as their Flag Ship of their line of double action revolvers. This model was the last see the Pinned Barrel and Recessed Cylinders; and the 4" barrel was only seen maybe two years, prior to ending this model.

The factory trigger on this Model features a double action, single stroke, non stacking, 8 lb. pull. It's further enhanced by it's heavy S&W N-Frame for recoil absorbing carbon steel frame. If one revolver comes close to a Python, this is the one.
