I have received this as a gift and am trying to find out some more about it. Everyone I see has the Argentinean Crest and info on the opposite side of the slide, mine has nothing but the serial number. Serial number seems to fall inline with being manufactured in 1951, but I've yet to see another like mine. Any help would be appreciated.

Not sure why so much of the text is unreadable but most of the information is there. Looks like yours wasn't military issue.

In most cases, the presence of an Argentine crest on the pistol indicates government issue; pistols without crests were made for police, non-national government agencies, commercial sales, and export. Also in most cases, barrels on pistols issued to the Army had blued chambers, but the chambers on Navy, police, and commercial barrels were milled after being blued, which resulted in a bright unfinished surface comparable to Colt commercial barrels. Serial numbers were stamped on the barrels prior to bluing, and therefore, bluing remained inside the numbers.

What you have is a Modelo 1927, which is a 1911 made in Argentina on tooling provided by colt. They are good surplus guns, that were very inexpensive at one time. That time has past. Does it still have those tiny GI sights? Mine has an arched mainspring housing.

Coaltrain's link has much more information.

I appreciate all the info, yes still has the tiny sites. And you say the time has passed? Does that mean they are worth something these days? Thank you.

Not sure the going rate, but probably in the $400-$600 range. Do all the serial numbers match, including the magazine? Worth more if they do. If you always wanted a copy 1911, bit didn't want to pay the freight, well, you have one. What does it say on the right side?

No other markings on the gun whatsoever, other than serial numbers, and yes all match. And no matching magazines...

I have not seen one that had nothing on the right side. Can you post pictures of the whole gun? Would like to see. Mine is the Aeronautical version, but mine is a shooter, not a collectable. Though my numbers matched, except the magazine. I have had a kart nm barrel fitted as well as normal sights that I can actually see. She is better than I am, but 3" at 25 yards is about the best I can do anyway.

Think long and hard about selling it. Getting harder to replace.

It sat in bad hands for a long time, getting it back into shape. Any suggestions are appreciated, novice gun owner.

Looks like it is in pretty nice shape. While I would not be able to use those sights, you may. Google 1911 function check, make sure it is empty and check it out. Here is a link.

Congrats on a nice gift.

Thanks, appreciate that. I have fired the gun, a long time ago. Step father had jamming issues on discharge. I took it apart and cleaned, it was filthy. Haven't fired since. Thinking maybe that was the issue.

That would be the price range around here. Although I was lucky enough to by a Colt 1991 A1 (series 80) unfired in the box a few years ago for $450. That won't happen again. I would rather have the Sistema but we never see those around here anymore. People who own them know what they have and they just don't sell them. It's a pretty good series 70 Colt even if it was built in SA.

I bought one about 8 years ago now, it had a pretty shot out barrel and the finish was meh...paid $400 back then. Since then it gotten a new barrel (NOS Colt Vietnam era chrome lined) new hammer, trigger job, grips, Ceracoate, springs, and night sights. With the exception of the trijicon sights, all parts have been bog standard Colt parts that pretty much dropped right in (barrel bushing needed some minor fitting). Now, it's a rock solid shooter, dead reliable and plenty accurate offhand out to 30yds.

Bone stock old 1911s often dont feed anything but 230gr. ball ammo reliably. Gotta have good quality magazines well.

That gun looks pretty good to me. I might give it a set of new springs and some wood grips and call it a day.

Welcome to the forum, BTW!

^^^^Good point, mine can be a little picky about mags. Chip McCormick shooting stars work great for 8 rounders, found someone with a horde of stainless Colt 7 round mags a while back, snapped up 10 for something like $5/each. It likes those and the CMC, and pretty much nothing else. Standard FMJ or Golden Sabre for hollwpoints feed just fine

I run factory Colts (OK Industries probably), and Wilson 7 rounders, and have a solitary McCormick 8 shot. All work great.:D
