Where to find someone to do an FFL transfer?

I hope this isn't the wrong place to ask... The local gun store charges $50 fee for FFL transfers. I would like to buy a gun online but $50 seems like a lot, and the guys at the gun store get kind of pissed when you ask them about it. I think they would much rather you bought a gun from them.

Is that a normal price or can I find cheaper? Is there a directory of people who do FFL transfers or something?

I believe the major auction sites all have lists to help you locate a local FFL. I had the great good fortune to locate my (now) friend Clark Lynn at Rock Creek Arms in Rogers, MN in this manner.

There are a lot of us small shop with much more reasonable rates. I can't understand why they'd be prissy. Income is income. Logining through the bound book and doing a NICS check take very little time. I guess your paying for their overhead.

Contact the local gunsmiths. They are FFLs and generally charge much less than gunstore owners.

FYI, my local gunstore charges $25, which I still think is expensive since it takes less than 5 minutes to do the transfer. I wouldnt pay anymore than $30.

The gunbroker and auction arms lists are very out of date and don't appear to be regularly updated (most likely the fault of the FFL's and not the web sight). Call before you decide on one.

In my area, NONE of the listed FFL transfers were correct as posted. Many had stopped. A few were no longer in business. Some had drastically raised fees. YMMV.

A J I Sporting Goods does transfers for $20. They're in Apache Junction, just outside Mesa.
