If a dealer ships a gun to another dealer in another state, I know they are allowed to use USPS, which in my case they did. What I am wondering is if they are required to use any special service of the postal service, such as Priority Mail or whatever. I mean, you can't just send it through regular mail, can you?

Well my brother paid for 2 grand of insurance so would that necessitate Priority? I want to know when to start bugging my ffl

Lol I just noticed you're less than a hundred miles from me. I'm in Mineral County WV

Anyone can use USPS to mail rifles or shotguns. Only dealers or manufacturers can mail firearms other than rifles or shotguns.

There is no requirement to use any particular level of service.

You can buy insurance for Priority Mail or Standard Mail packages.

Ask your brother for the tracking# before this.

I am in Berkeley County and own some acreage near Elk Garden so I'm familiar with Mineral County.

Just because your brother paid for $2k in insurance doesn't mean the sending FFL insured the gun through USPS. Many self-insure since USPS/UPS/FedEx are slow to pay on claims or simply refuse to pay.

Your brother should ask the sending FFL for the tracking number.

...and here is where having a really good relationship with your dealer/FFL comes in handy.

My local GS/FFL sold me an S&W M64 (Brinks trade-in) about a year ago. Recently, a member here on THR posted that he was looking for something similar. Since I never shoot it, I contacted him and offered to sell it to him for what I paid ($200 OTD).

He agreed. I took the handgun (five minute walk) to my LGS and told her what was going on; she asked me if I wanted to leave it with her. I did. His FFL sent info/copy/address/etc. She shipped the gun, using insured USPS (as she has done before). Cost me about $20.

The buyer had not yet sent payment. Ooops. He received the gun and emailed "you are the most trusting person I have ever met. I will send payment". I walked up to my FFL and ribbed her a little. She said, "If he doesn't send payment, I'll cover it."

Do you think she will have my business as long as I walk this planet? Hell, yes.

BTW, the buyer sent payment, everyone is happy.

I am especially happy to have an FFL like that.

If you are in the North Texas area, pm me and I will be happy to share. She also does $20 transfers (with a smile) and will order any gun for about 10% over her actual cost (well below MSRP!) :)

BTW new postal rule

You do not have to insure to have tracking. Simply sending something by Priority Mail automatically has tracking and $50 of insurance.

Not really tracking, but delivery confirmation. There is a difference.

No Hexhead

If you send something priority you have automatic tracking. It is a recent change by the postal service. I know the difference between delivery confirmation and tracking.

HexHead,
USPS is calling it "tracking" now; within the last year or so they have updated the terminology. Post Office counter personnel can't correct patrons who call it tracking.

What does USPS Tracking™ show?

Enter your label number to see the status of your item. If you shipped with Priority Mail Express™, you’ll get point-by-point tracking details. If you used another service—USPS Tracking™, Certified Mail™, Registered Mail™ —you’ll see when it went out for delivery.
