Hey everybody. I have a question about the LE Wilson Case length headspace gauge for 300 blackout.

I was using the Hornady case gauge and was having issues with the fully loaded round not sitting flat in it once the bullet was seated, despite the rounds chambering fine. I ended up purchasing the LE Wilson Case Length Headspace gauge to determine if my Hornady Gauge was out of spec. All of the rounds drop into the LE Wilson gauge just fine despite being loaded or unloaded. However even un-sized brass is dropping into it just fine as well. Is it supposed to do that? I’m all of my other gauges unsized brass almost never sits correctly in the gauge. I’m confused about what is actually being measured with the LE Wilson gauge. Is it safe to assume that if a completed round sits flat in the gauge that it will chamber in the gun without issue? Sorry for the dumb question but I’m kind of at A loss for what to do about loading this caliber. My last post has more information about the exact issues I’m having.

On all of my other loads the unsized/fired case usually doesn’t fit until I run it through the full length sizer.

I have a Wilson cartridge case gage for 300blk and all your questions are answered in the instructions

Just in general terms the case shoulder angles of the new brass are not perfect match to your chamber angles, case gages are not perfect either but I find them closer to specs then mass produced virgin brass.

Wilson will check overall length to indicate the need for trimming, datum to head length to assure correct headspace and to prevent over sizing.

It does NOT check any diameters.

I sold my useless 223 gage. full.jpg

Do you use a Wilson gauge for all of your other loads? If not, that might be a clue.

Instructions? We don't need no steenkin' instructions! We've got the internet! ;)

It checks cartridge headspace and OAL. It isn’t a chamber checker or SAAMI spec gauge for diameter.

are you feeling for the “step” around the back of the case to check proper headspace/shoulder setback? That’s what this gauge is for. Read the instructions :)

Yes that's the way it works....it's suppose to be used with 'fired cases'. The real question is, why does Wilson call it a gage when it's really a gauge?

Gage is another spelling for gauge. Means the same thing.

"A gage is an instrument for measuring, like the gas gage in your car that tells you it's time to fill 'er up. It's also spelled "gauge.""
