Question about loading a hollow base wadcutter upside down

Well we all had to go through that experimental stage at one time just to see four ourselves. I found it rather anticlimactic compared to a regular hollow point impact. So much for cheating and being cheap!
Maybe we can save you some time and componants.
I never tried the reversed HBWC but I did develop a standard load that pushes a DEWC over 850fps out of a 4” barrel in .38Spl and a .32S&W Long DEWC close to 900fps from a stubby little 3” Colt Pocket Positive. Both are very accurate and good for dispatching vermin’s

Way back when I was experimenting with HBWC I tried some backwards. I loaded the a bit higher than my normal 3.0 gr. of Bullseye and shot them into wet newsprint at about 15'. My results were poor. Some skirts collapsed, some tore off, some cavities clogged with media and acted like poor solids, and a few opened. Very inconsistent results and results too poor to continue after 25-30 rounds. I went to a commercial Speer JHP and my own cast DEWC. Some reloaders reported good results with extreme expansion, but my loads in a 2" 38 Special were disappointing...

This practice was very popular before I got into reloading, but I had a friend who reloaded and we discussed the practice at length to determine the scope and viability of the process.

1. Load the reversed HBWC using the same load as with a DEWC
2. Load the WC flush with the case mouth to most closely duplicate the case volume of the DEWC in the case...we used to roll crimp (as you would to feed through a 1911) to ease entry into the cylinder chambers
3. Driving the bullet faster could result in tearing off a skirt in flight
4. Accuracy suffers due to the huge hollow point...loads that would overlap at 7-10 yards would easily open up to 4"

As already mentioned, if you are looking for stopping power in this smaller cartridge, you're better off leaning toward increased penetration than toward expansion...coupled with superior accuracy as needed with all smaller calibers

Wadcutters cut a nice whole and do nice damage loaded the right way. The nose is the entire diameter as apposed to a Semi Wadcutter or RNL. Not condoning hot rodding the little caliber but if you load the wadcutters to the top end of published data you would find you have a nice little round, that has a wide nose and will penetrate.

Are you loading the reversed HBWC in this scenario? If you load it flush this way, it will take up more space than a DEWC loaded flush, because the HBWC is longer than the DEWC (of the same weight) so it will be deeper than the DEWC would sit.

I don't currently loaded wadcutters...mostly because I don't have any and don't compete in any sports where they would offer an advantage. As I stated in my original post, this was before I started reloading.

IIRC he was loading the HBWC over 2.7grs Bullseye
