There is a chance that I'll have to go to New Orleans in the near future to take some field notes (I'm an OSP designer for telco).

What is the crime situation in the city now? Unfortunately, I don't have my FL CCW permit yet, do I need to consider open carry? The area I'll be in, at least to start, will be Chalmette.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can provide!

What ever you do don't carry open. Someone will steal you pistol.:D

N.O.

I have been to NO half a dozen times, most recently last Fall.
It had been over two years since Katrina and the downtown area - Bourbon Street/French Quarter etc was as safe and relatively clean ( as safe and clean as that area can be) the outer edges were still a war zone.

I couldn't believe it, it had been over two years since the hurricane but it might as well have been just two days with a some bombing thrown in.
I've lived in DC/Philly/Boston/NYC and never saw anything like this.

A year later, I am not sure things are much better. The ride from the airport to downtown will tell you.

Just returned from there. A cop on the street car said the NOLA cops use .40 S & W. He was somewhat friendly. Most of the serious crime is drug related. We didn't experience any problems during our 5 days walking the city. I was told to get off the street after 1 AM. (by friends) Also ran into a street hustling gang trying to "bet" and intimidate tourists into paying $5 on stupid bets. I just gave them a blank stare and they moved on. I don't know the gun laws there - but don't generally carry mine across country anyway. Good luck to you.

Most of the city that you would likely see is recovered.
