Question about the Winchester Value White Box

Just what are these rounds made of (9mm)? I know it is a FMJ, but the round doesn't look like copper. Is it steel?

Question: The 9mm value pack that I purchased at Wal-Mart appears to have a bullet with a copper tip?

Answer: The 9mm value pack has a bullet jacket made of a different alloy than the traditional bullet. This is the same alloy used in the BEB (Brass Enclosed Base) bullet loaded in the WinClean line. The WinClean load will be cleaner due to the use of lead free primer, cleaner propellant, and a bullet with an enclosed base.

The bullets are the same color as the cases; so I figure they are jacketed in cartridge brass. Cartridge brass is 70% copper, 30% zinc; the usual reddish gilding metal 95% copper, 5% zinc. Zinc is substantially cheaper than copper - pennies have been copper plated zinc for several years. Cheaper ammo, cheaper materials. Seems to shoot ok, though. Some European ammo like S&B econo-ball has brass jackets, too.

I don't reload myself, but I have read many accounts of people reloading the Winchester White Box brass. It's around $11 for a box of 100 so you're not investing much to just buy a box and try it.

The only other round I've shot with any regularity (ie more than 500 rounds) is Fiocchi 115gr FMJ. The Fiocchi is noticeably more consistent than the Winchester White Box. But the cost difference keeps me going back to it. You get what you pay for, but if you're just punching paper with some buddies, then it's well worth it.

I'll have 2000 rounds through my guns since I discovered them last year. A little on the smokey side, but still not bad. More than acceptable accuracy.

All I know is that they work great in my CZ and Sig. Accurate enough for IDPA.

I have about 900 rounds sitting in two ammo cans, that are topped off with Glock "full caps" for range use..

I've never had any problems with any of the WallyWorld White box ammo that I have purchased.. It goes bang everytime..

The one thing that I don't like is the brass colored residue that comes off of there .223 Remington ammo.. After shooting 100 or so rounds, I've got this glittery(brass colored) powder all over my HK Sl8 and hands.. Other than that, it's good, cheap ammo.

I shoot the Value Pack 9mm Winchester a lot. I bought all my local Wally World had this weekend, they had it reduced to $8.99 a box. My Browning HPs like them and my little CZ 75D PCR loves them.

My P99 has never eat anything else. no malfunction of anykind. I have always assumed the bullets were brass jacketed. the cases themself look be be the same quality as any other winchester case.

Almost as much as Skunk at home.
Still, I haven't bought any ammo since before Xmas, so now there's an idea for tomorrow!

I buy it sometimes, but find that it is inconsistent, recoil and report can vary a lot from shot to shot. Dirty as heck too. For value priced 9mm, take a look at the Dynamit-Nobel "Geco" stuff. Blue box. Very clean, recoil is less snappy than some other 9mm, very accurate. Makes USPSA minor PF too. Only drawback is that it is copper washed steel jacket, doesn't hurt backstops as it is not going very fast, but some indoor ranges think it does.
