Detroit. um... Dogg.
I'm planning on buying a receiver peep sight for my Marlin 336. I've been leaning toward to Williams FP-94/36, but I notice that it comes in two versions, one with "Target Knobs", and one without.

would it be worthwhile to get the version with the Target Knobs? it's unlikely that I would be shooting the 30-30 much past 100yds, what with the short ranges around here, but would I be missing out?

do any of you actually adjust on the fly, or just set it and forget it?

I use FPs on my contender for metallic silhoute. That one has the target knobs, works really nice for dialling in elevation between distances. I also have a set fitted to my masuer sporter, that one does not have knobs, it gets set and stays that way for as long as I shoot that particular load....years usually.

The FP sights on the 336 are a great combination, but on a rifle that will see mostly field use the target knobs aren’t really necessary.

I am also about to put sights on a 336, but was trying to decide between the FP and the 5D.

This would be for a deer/hog hunting gun.

You do not need or want the Target Knobs on a hunting rifle. Just something else sticking out in the way & getting caught on brush & or bumped on things.

For hunting, you will sight it in once, lock it down, and never touch it again unless you change ammo brands or bullet weight.
In otherwords, set it & forget it!

I do highly recommend the FP over the 5D.
Much more positive adjustments that you can see & feel.

You "could" save the differance in price in wasted ammo while sighting in.

BTW: If you sight it in 2" high at 100 yards your point blank range will be about 200, or as far as you will likely be shooting a 30-30 with iron sights.

Like RC says, no knobs if it's a hunter. I've used FP and owned 5D types. The FP is more accurate to adjust (although the 5D isn't difficult) and they both lock in fine once set.

Agreed!

ok! looks like the FP "clean" is the one, then. I've never hunted, but I probably will just to say I have. well, that and venison is tasty. :p

I usually just go to the range, but the lever is probably what I would bring in a SHTF situation, and I just want to get all the accuracy I can get out of it.
