If the officer says he’s detaining you, immediately ask, “For suspicion of what crime are you detaining me? If he has a legitimate reason, he’ll tell you. If not, he’ll avoid the question. Then listen and keep your mouth shut. If he’s not detaining you, or sidesteps the question, then he’s probably just trying to make you uncomfortable enough to conceal.

I hear this a lot and maybe it's just me but if the police say they're detaining me I really don't care why, all I need to know is that I'm only a lip flap or two away from the cuffs. IMO this is not the time to be playing sidewalk lawyer. The cops have been doing this longer than you and they’re better at it. Even if you ask them why what are you going to do when they pull some bogus charge out? You don’t know all the laws of the state anymore than they do. To me if the cop says “Yes I am detaining you. “It’s in my best interests to say “OK I want to talk to a lawyer.” and shut up.

And I agree with this. For one reason, by asking, "Under suspicion of what crime?" you are losing your poker face. After they tell you they are detaining you...only provide the minimum cooperation required by law, shut up about everything else, and let them come up with there "reasonable suspicion" for the first time in front of the judge in court when they are required to prove the lawfulness of their detainment.

I'll take this one step further and tie it back into what Mainsail said In My Opinion It seems likely that if it is a bogus detention they'll let you go when you ask for a lawyer because the lawyer can face up to them better than you can.

Even if that's not correct they sure can't bust you for standing there with your mouth shut.

I'm seeing more discussion here related to activism than ST&T. Which seems to be the way all OC/CC threads are destined to go, no matter how many caveats are posted.

This would appear to be a poor venue for OC threads... UNLESS they stick strictly to Strategies for self defense, Tactics for self defense, or Training for self defense, and leave out activism components completely.
