Does anyone have any experience "grandfathering" a banned weapon? From what I understand, when Chicago banned handguns years ago (except for Aldermen, by the way), people who already owned handguns could register them and have them "grandfathered in." If they ever forgot to re-register, however, they were up a creek and would have to surrender their handgun.

The reason I'm asking is that there are always efforts underway in Chicago and Illinois in general to ban certain types of weapons. I'm currently shopping for a bolt-action. If it seemed as though Blagojevich and Daley were going to get their way and pass an "Assault Weapons Ban", though, I'd be inclined to pick up a Mini-14 while I could. That's assuming I could "grandfather it in." Any thoughts or insights are welcome. Thanks.

If I were you, I would buy it yesterday. They are going for every ban they can squeeze through the Stalinois legislature, and quickly.

By "grandfathering in" a weapon, you mean you want to tell them you have it? Why on Earth would you want to do that?

Well, I guess in Illinois it's a moot point--your freedom to buy it in an unmonitored private sale has already been revoked, and now Big Bro knows one way or the other (they require background checks with the state at gun shows too now). Their police state also keeps records of all FFL and gun show sales indefinitely. Have a nice day.

And hey, move to Indiana!

Grandfathering depends on how they write the law. But they probably can't stop you from sticking the gun in a storage unit across the state line, one way or another. I'd get it.

No grandfathering in HB 2414

One of many egregious items in IL HB 2414 is the lack of grandfathering, and I believe, the lack of compensation for confiscated guns.

If Blago/Daley get it passed many of us will become overnight felons.

No, wait a minute, that's not quite true.

We will all have 90 days to turn in our "assault weapons" to the police (with nothing in the way of compensation for the guns). After 90 days we will become felons.

That will include my 1968 Marlin Model 60 "Assault .22" that holds 14 rounds in the tube.
