I am going on a trip to Northern PRK in two weeks. I have a CHL in Oregon, Cal wont honor it, so what's the correct way to store my gun while driving in Kali?

Also is open carry legal? I will be in Shasta County, Redding/Anderson area.

Thanks!

Open carry is banned.

Car carry for handguns:

Unloaded, in a smaller locked container, with no ammo in the locked small container, in the trunk.

Long-guns: similar, but the rifle case doesn't have to be locked, I don't think. But still unloaded, unaccessable.

:barf:

AFAIK open carry is legal as long as the gun is unloaded*. Of course this will get you LOTS of unwanted attention.

What type of car do you have, a minivan, SUV, sedan, stationwagon, pickup, etc? Concealable (all handguns and long guns with 16" of barrel or less) arms must be locked in your passenger compartment* and the glove box doens't count as locked either.

Laws are in the gray on whether loaded mags, stripper clips etc are loaded guns. Some say that mags themselves count as guns even if they're a part.*

* of course, in the words of LA's great urban poets, check yo'self before you wreck yo'self.

For me, I have an SUV and a CCW. I transport my long guns in behind the back seat. Reason I don't have it in the trunk is if I get in an accident, I don't want it flying forward and hitting me in the head so it lays right behind the driver and passenger seat. Long guns stay unloaded.

I used to transport my handguns in a backpack with a padlock and mags UNLOADED in a separate zipped compartment of the backpack in the frontseat.

Now I don't know you and am in no way passing judgment on your character based on your looks, but if for some reason you're the type that's a cop magnet, I'd do what I can to keep from getting arrested if you get searched. I think if you're a clean guy who wears a suit all the time and drives a bling bling car (and not Black or some will think you're a drug dealer  ) it'll make the difference on if you think you can get by with a loaded mag or not than if you're a guy with tattoos, unshaven and an older model car.

As I said again, check yourself before you wreck yourself!

And I WOULD NOT DO OPEN CARRY. It'll attract too much unwanted attention.

FWIW fixed blades concealed are a felony but folders, whatever size, concealed are AOK. Butterflys, stilettos, automatics, nanchakus, etc. are prohibido.

Leave your ferrets at home.

general question

I too am of the opinion that it is legal to have an unloaded long gun in the main compartment of the vehicle (say, behind front seats), either covered up or openly displayed. But what about the ammunition? Where then does that have to be? Anyone?

AFAIK* ammo can be attached to the saddle or on an external carrier, but clips and mags can be loaded* but cannot be touching the firearm itself. For extra nicey nicey I just leave the mags unloaded and the ammo in a backpack or shopping bag.

I doubt the State AG could give you the correct answer, but he'll be damned if you don't get prosecuted for violating the law.

To be certain, keep ammo in separate container than firearm or not loaded into a magazine within the same container as the firearm. Make sure firearm container is locked.

RED ALERT!!! Jim has been replaced by an imposter! :p You can toss your unloaded handgun in the trunk, and your unloaded longgun can be anywhere in the vehicle.

Now, you're supposed to only have firearms in your vehicle when you're are transporting them to/from a range/gunsmith, or to/from another residence (like your hotel room, campsite (if otherwise legal)), etc.)....

I haven't checked on this one, but isn't that only for 'concealable' firearms?

Skunk with a CCW?

Just noticed you got your CCW. If I remember right you live in Irvine, CA. How'd you manage to get a CCW from them? I understood the city is rather difficult to get a permit from.

Just curious. I might give it a try for the CCW. What was you experience?

Thanks.

No, it's Jim :).

Yes, you can legally toss a handgun in the trunk. But if there's any AMMO back there, you're screwed - they're not separate.

Best solution: lock the gun in a container, put that in trunk, put ammo in trunk in...whatever, grocery bag, loose, doesn't matter.

Skunky is WRONG about open carry. That was banned right after the Black Panthers tried it .

Btw, way up North like that, they are generally not that uptight about guns as long as you aint all crazy.

Far North CA can actually seem like America at times.

Well My only two vehicles are a BLACK VW Jetta and an Orange '78 Toyota p/u complete with US flag on the CB antenna and NRA & GOA stickers in rear window, big dent in side of bed and a .22 bullet hole in the other?????? Guess I'll be rolling the Jetta huh:uhoh: Im a pretty clean-cut guy

So I figure Before I cross the border I'll stick the ol' XD in its box in the trunk w/padlock, keep the mags inside the car... sound good? And the open carry thing I was thinking about having with me when we go out on the Lake Shasta ... you know just in case sumptin comes up, But if not legal I could just leave it in the box on the boat????

I shall also give a call to Shasta County CHP station & see what they reccomend, seeing as they'll be the ones dealing with it if I get pulled over.<----- good idea or no?

Thanks!

campsite open carry is ok,BUT!

CHECK with local leo/rangers.
the rangers I talked to in mendicino national forest
where real friendly and said
that I could carry open at my campsite in the nat forest
(NOT YOSEMITE!! NAT FOREST ONLY)
but that state forest has different rules.
also I could target practice if I follow common sense
safety rules(again national forest)...
I open carry in SANFRANCISCO! when I go to
the range or gunshow at the cow palace
it's allways unloaded,I hop in the car and
do not go in any stores or anything...the cops at the gun show
don't even blink an eye
