Oh wise ones:

Can anyone give me a primer on what the dashes after the model # 686 signify? I mean, I know they indicate a series of revisions and alterations, but is there a # below which I should not dare to go? And is a 686 with no dash following going to be as reliable, accurate, sturdy, as a -5? How about a -1, or 2, or 3? You get the idea.

Thanks for your help.
