I am looking on the Marstar webpage in Ontario and they have the Norinco M-305 (M-14 clone) for $400 CDN. Are these rifles a good purchase? I like tinkering with firearms, and will probably modify it as I go, but I want a good rifle to start with that will shoot well (~ 1.5" @ 100 yards) or will shoot well without swapping out the barrel.

Also, I am left handed and I am worried about brass in the face: do they eject back or straight out to the side?

No info on that one, but the typical rifle of that type when lubed correctly will eject the brass between 1:00 and 3:00 positions, mine closer to the 1:00.

All I've ever heard is the forged receiver makes a great starting point for building your own rifle and that a lot of the rest of the parts are junk of varying degrees.

The receiver alone is worth the price (~ $300US), but don't get your hopes too high about accuracy.

I just bought one, Carson, and I'm happy with it so far (though I'm not really impressed with the typical Chinese "tung wood" stock). My rifle ejects out to 2:00 fairly consistently, and I'm looking forward to see what it can do off of a bench (off-hand, it seems about as accurate as most other rifles I've got). If you'd like any more info, or even want to see it on the range sometime, PM me, and I'll be happy to oblige. :)

All I can say is ive had one for 10 years now and while my buddies springfield keeps throwing extractors and some other M1A horror stroies ive heard my commie M14 just keeps chugging away.GiI parts have to be fit if you redoe it and you should get it re parkerized and heat treated a little better but for the price for a forged rifle its worth it.:D

Thanks guys, it gives some more info to go on. When I say i am looking for about 1.5", that would be with a scope and my own custom load for her. SDC keep me informed about how it works for you, I am looking for one after I know whether I owe the government or the gorvernment owes me. You can email me at [email protected] with any interesting information.

Since you're in Kanada, figure that you owe the govt. That way they can keep providing all that "free" healthcare.

I'd suggest posting to the Garand/M1A forum at jouster.com. There are frequent comparisions of receivers. But that's about 1/2 or 1/3rd what you'd pay in the USA.
