Ammo In The Open

I've been in several 'Marts and have bought ammo in most of those.

I have often seen shotgun ammo stacked on end displays and near cleaning and target stuff.

However all their rifle/pistol ammo is under the counter or in a locked display case.

This last week, however, I finally got to see .30-06 -- a pallet of the stuff -- open-displayed on the floor in Sporting Goods.

Maybe it's only done up here in Idaho, but I had to smile.

Yup. Keep the dangerous .22 LR and 9mm and .45 ACP locked up. But that .30-06 stuff? Well, hey, it's huntin' season. That ain't dangerous, it's huntin' ammo.

Then again, your mileage . . .

Yet another Wal-mart story

When I lived in Massachusetts I went to the local Wal-mart during lunch break since I knew they were having an ammo sale. Got 250 rounds of 12 gauge #4 shot. The clerk looked at me and said "Number four? What are you going to shoot with that?"

To which I replied "anything that comes through my front door without knocking first".

Yet another priceless look, especially in gun-unfriendly MA.

Or Not

Every time I go into a store with a decent gun counter, I ask them if they have any Rem 7600 series -- particularly the 7615.

I ALWAYS get a blank look.

Nope, they don't stock them.

If our friend had been talking about that series, it surely would not have been because he actually saw one anywhere.

I'm guessing that is not the case.

Good point Arfin, I hadn't thought of it that way... I got to see but not shoot one a couple of weeks ago (it was in the trunk of the LT's car). He likes it, but it only holds a 10 round mag of .223.

Fond memory...

A hundred (seemingly) years ago, I worked in the SG dept. at a local Worldus Wallyus. A fella who owned a trap range used to get a volume discount on Federal Top Gun because he ordered it 3 pallets at a time. Nice, older gentleman. A wealth of knowledge and not a mean bone in his body.

One day, he came in and cleaned us out of all the Top Gun we had onhand, about 15 cases. I loaded it into a cart for him and we talked all the way up to the main registers. A soccer mom in line in front him looked into his cart and noticed the metric ton of ammo.

Lady's eyes got as big as dinner plates and she breathlessly asked him why he was buying so much ammunition.

Without missing a beat or changing expression he replied, "Because I miss a lot."

I miss that old fella. I hope he's still around.

Old NFO, if I remember correctly, you can use an AR-15 mag in one of those. Granted, I've heard so many complaints about AR-15 magazines that I wouldn't believe it.

All you guys complaining about buying ammo at Walmart should try buying Sudafed.

I just bought a box the other day. Had to show my ID, had to sign my name into the computer, they recorded the sale for the police. I told the guy at the pharmacy counter; "Damn, its easier to buy ammo here than Sudafed!"

He laughed and agreed that all the hoops I had to jump through were ridiculous.

Wally World Love

Apparently I'm shopping at all the wrong wal marts. The ones I go to (for locals) Stapley and Ahwatukee have/had great people behind the counter. A few of the guys were more fishing folk than gunnies but can't begrudge them that.

Once when buying a rifle when I was a sophmore in college the manager (of course) had to come look at the paperwork. A (NON THR) young lady came to "check me out." Well my paperwork got checked out, I got checked out. And so did she! That got me a few dates! Love it.

Oh and Arfin, Idaho isn't the only place they put ammo out. It's not all the time but it does happen!

So here's a fairly serious question

If the clerk really thought that no one needs to buy 100 round boxes of ammo, why didn't someone (the customer, the manager, the greeter at the door) point out that 100 round boxes how the manufacturer packages them for sale? That every store that sells ammo stocks these boxes?

The last time I bought ammo in quantity at Wally World, I was buying for a "open to the public" day at the local club. I had a club check, and I filled a shopping cart. I don't know what they thought, but no one said anything.

well, i have only bought ammo from a walmart once, my buddy and i were gettin ready for a day of skeet shootin so i bought 200 rounds of bonus pack 7 1/2 field loads. the packages were sittin on an endcap and there was no one at the sg counter so i took them up front to pay for them. as i went to the register the chashier(a lady) gave me a very odd look and walked off at a very fast pace to get her manager! the manager gave me the same scared look and asked me what i was going to use the ammo for. i was quite annoyed and replied "im gonna shoot some skeet!" the guy asked me if skeet was some sort of racial slur! i payed for my ammo and left without another word, never been back to a mart for ammo! btw, two sides to any counter, but the fact remains that our public is extremely uneducated when it comes to firearmes which leads to unecessary discrimination of firearm owners! to own a firearm is to assume responsibility, we need to make people aware and build their trust in our responsibility as firearm owners!

Whew, a Wal*Mart thread that's still open. Must be because we're not all hatin'. I think my thread got closed witihin 9 posts, and I got the same "I thought we all agreed no more Wal*Mart threads" Funny, though, I make it a point on every new forum I join to read all the rules, suggestions, stickies. Never remember seeing a "No more Wal*Mart threads" post.

Anyway, the local Wal*Mart, at least here in my town, has stopped selling guns (except BP) but still has some ammo. It's hit or miss, and no, i've never understood why the shotgun ammo is piled up, but they've only got two boxes of 9mm behind the counter.

Actually if a person were to lay all the comments made on "Wal*Mart bashing" threads, they'd stretch from East to the West coast. Lump most of the comments together and they continue to say the same thing over and over. What is really accomplished? If you really want to accomplish something, send a letter or email to W*M corporate and let them know your dissatisfaction. Wait a minute, it's easier to post here with "group think" and make you feel better. Take that Wal*Mart!

The Wal-Marts around here (all three of them) used to ask me if it was for a handgun or a rifle. I always said rifle, but since I'm rather obviously over the age of 21 it doesn't matter. They ask because the law doesn't allow handgun ammo to be sold to people under the age of 21, but 18 year olds can buy rifle ammo. I even had to show my driver's license once, to prove I was over the age of 18.

More recently, there is a slight pause when they get to that screen on the register, the clerk looks at me, and punches the appropriate key without saying a word.

I am a wal-mart manager, and I can tell you that most of our associates that are qualified to talk guns with the customers, are too hard of workers, and too important to the rest of the business for me to stick them behind a counter all day chatting up customers. that's what part-time workers are for.

What you're saying, Steve, is that the Peter principle is alive and well at Wal-Mart, and that as a result we can be fully assured that anyone who is allowed to interact with customers isn't qualified to do anything important. Thanks, I'm so glad to know that. God forbid we should allow anyone who knows anything about guns to sell guns.

Their North Olmsted, Ohio store stopped selling guns, but always has a big stock of all kinds of ammunition. I bought all of my 9mm self-defense ammunition there as well as the .44 Magnum I carried in my Model 29 while hunting.

They've got plenty of ammunition. It's getting somebody to wait on you that's the problem. I once asked twice and waited an hour without getting any service. They've been much better in recent months.
