After an appropriate period of mourning, lift your head...
...and do something.
Other posters are currently correct in that the Hill is held by a narrow margin
and the left-wing will be wary of anything that could throw the balance of
power back in 2010. However, those of use old enough to remember 1992
through 1994 know quite well how willing members of the radical left are in
sacrificing their own in moving "their cause" forward. In other words, expect
a major gun control bill within the next two years. (If you doubt my predictive
abilities, please read my posts over the last two years to see how we all
arrived at this point this morning).
I disagree that the economy is going to improve over the next year since all
the numbers, bank sales, etc point to the opposite happening. You haven't
even seen the start of the real economic fall-out yet! That said, history
shows crime gets worse as the overall economy gets worse --does the
Great Depression and the original machine gun ban come to mind? As things
go down hill, gun control/crime control will be on the top of the list when
it comes to supposedly fixing things and making "change" lead the way. So
you can count on gun control bills.
Things you can do:
1. Join the NRA. Yes, I know all the usual reasons not to, but it's kind of
like only having one car in the garage and then complaining about driving it
because the gas milage, speed, seating, isn't exactly the way we would
like it. At this point, though, walking by yourself is not an option since you
will miss the rally ahead. Meanwhile, the opposite side has plenty of
public transportation to utilize for their cause. Quit griping, it's time for us
to car-pool.
2. Get involved at the local level. Some state orgs are better than others.
Likewise, some states are excellent at maintaining the 2A and the real
threat comes at them only from the federal level. Your state org may not
seem like it's really needed at your level, but you will find they're often the
people who are best informed at what's coming done the pike.
3. If you're a veteran get involved w/ the American Legion and/or VFW. No,
these are not 2A orgs, but they're the people who are connected to other
local movers and shakers in your community. Once you're a member, get a
Garand through the CMP --let their sales numbers show the bureaucrats
above that we are very involved and active.
4. Not a veteran? Fine, again there are other local orgs that may not be
2A, but are great for making connections throughout your community. This
can be a place of worship, a community business org, or some other non-profit.
5. Go to a range that has members other than your immediate family. Say
Hi and meet some people. Take a new person target shooting or hunting.
6. Run for office. Some of us are information-processing introverts who make
far better back-stage consultants rather than council members, representatives,
etc. We know this. I'm asking those of you who can work a room and press
the flesh to put your well-refined extrovert abilities for making synergy or
whatever it's called today to use for our cause. I promise you will have
plenty of opportunities for social gathering where people will loan you all
sorts of weapons and free ammunition.
7. Think long term. The other side does. I know our side has a tendency to
say "enough talking already" before slinging the EBR over one shoulder, grabbing
a vine and swinging across the alligator-infested river. However, we have to
be wary of landing in the quick-sand on the other side. Yes, sometimes the
introverts are far too cautious when the risk needs to be taken, but other
times the extroverts and the pack they're leading find themselves in the
quagmire and say "How did that happen?!" We need to listen to each other,
PLAN AHEAD, and then MOVE TOGETHER. But for this to work, we all need
to be humble and honest within our own house.
8. Quit crying, re-read this list, and start checking it off.
