I've posted pictures and stories of my beloved Jadgterrier Kubi over the last three years it is with great sadness and deepest regret that I must report Kubi was killed last week in Texas.

Kubi died doing what he loved the most...Hog hunting.

Kubi was bitten in the throat by a large rattle snake after he tangled with the snake. Kubi had been through snake training twice and had passed with flying colors. I'd like to believe that Kubi was protecting me as I was very near to stepping on the snake when the "Kubinator" jumped into the middle of the serpent and fought him.

I was able to pull Kubi out of the fray but it was to late and the damage was done Kubi received a lethal dose of snake venom into the carotid artery. I rushed him to Guthire Texas and the kind ranch vet on staff did all he could do for Kubi.

Kubi died 6 hours after the bite he was in a familiar setting and was accompanied by myself and his second best friend Ashley Emerson. Just before Kubi died he gently licked my hand. He then quietly passed on.

R.I.P.

Some pics of the Kubinator, forever gone....

Thank you for the memories...

The best hunting partner I ever had.

And a loved member of our family.

H&H,
Sorry to hear about Kubi. The friendship of a good field dog, who works as part of your team and part of your family, is something few people ever know.
Joel

My sympathies. You can see the disdain for the hogs in his eyes. Did he kill the snake, or did you pull him off before he finished the snake off?

Subby,

He had bit the snake nearly in half but the dangerous part was still working. I shot it with a .358 then took his rattle. Rather like scalping an enemy.

Funny you should mention Kubi's disdain for hogs. That dog would have rather fought a hog than breathed. He HATED any and all hogs. We brought him to fair last year on a lead and when we got near the hog barn Kubi flipped out I had to pick him up and carry him back to the truck and put him in his dog box. Kubi very badly wanted to jump inot the middle of the 4H hog barn and start laying waste to all the little piggys. :D

Sorry to hear about Kubi. The friendship of a good field dog, who works as part of your team and part of your family, is something few people ever know.

Joel,

Thank you as you mentioned the bond that develops between a field dog and a hunter is avery strong one indeed.

To all,

Thank you for your comments

It is appreciated.

Truly good dogs are better companions than many people.

I have felt your pain before.

Sorry to hear of your loss of such a good friend. It's hard to fill that gap. My condolances go out to you and your family. Rob Sr.

Condolences

It's all been said. But I've also said goodbye to some fine canines. I am glad that Kubi was doing the thing he loved when he got his fatal wound.

The bond between a human and a dog is nowhere else to be found. You were blessed in this bond for a time; rejoice in the good memories.

Dog Owners' Prayer: "Oh God, help me to be half the man my dog thinks I am."

A dog doesn't know how to give less than 100% of his loyalty and love.

My Condolences.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

I have several friends waiting at the Bridge. I sure Kubi will be there waiting for you and will know where all the goo hog hunting is to be found.

At first I started to say I feel sorry for you and the dog...I've changed my mind. I feel sorry for you and your family, but not the dog. See, dogs have an instinct, something in them that tells them "I am a hunter, I am a fighter, I am a warrior". All dogs have it. All men have it. Most never use it because it simply does not "fit" in our "civilized" world or in the case of men, they are scared to tap their primal side...but that's another story. Your dog died being what he was always meant to be. Most dogs never see a field or hunting ground or anything of the sort. I am sorry to say that in the city most dogs are confined to a back yard or kennel for the entirety of their lives, having to be content with chasing a cat, squirl or stranger or simply barking through glass at the world on the outside.

It's kind of a metaphor on modern man....

...Jeez I've got to quit drinking so late.

Hello, sir. Respect and sympathy from my house to yours on this loss. Dogs are unique, wonderful creatures and yours was obviously a family member...and that's a good thing.

Again, my sincere condolences on the loss of your good friend.

Best.

I'm very sorry H&H. My dogs are like my children as well, and when I lost one, I cried like a baby.

Maybe this will help.

A faithful dog will will play with you
And laugh with you and cry.
He'll gladly starve to stay with you
Nor even reason why.

And when you're feeling out of sorts
Somehow he'll understand
He'll watch you with his shining eye
And try to lick your hand.

His blind implicit faith in you
Is matched by his great love...
The kind that all of us should have
In the Master up above.

When everything is said and done
I guess this isn't odd,
For when you spell "dog" backwards,
You get the name of God.

(I don't know who the author of this poem is)

Guys,

Thank you all for the words of encouragement.

Alduro...YES YES YES!!!

When I wrote about having to hold back from killing the guy who shot at family last year this is EXACTLEY what you are talking about. I am in touch with my primal side, which is why I can relate with such a fine and noble beasts as the ones I so love to hunt and the one I so loved to hunt with.

I refuse to be kept in the yard chasing squirles and my dogs won't either.

I don't feel sorry for Kubi either. He died a warriors death just as I'd pefer when the time comes. It is a tough void to fill however losing a friend and a fellow hunter.

Once again.

Thank you all.

Greg

PS

I am flying out to Missouri next monday to pick up "Nitro" he will be 8 weeks old and is a blood relative to Kubi, same sire different bitch. He is the biggest strongest pup in the litter and is already showing signs of being a blocky, strong, tough, dog.

This dog will be "hunting" hogs by the time he is 4 months old just like his half brother was. I'll have him blood tracking before he's house broken.

Greg,

My condolences. I know the feeling. I buried my 17 year old Springer, Daisy Mae, after her heart quit, a few years ago now.

Daisy was happiest when she was flushing birds out in front of me, keeping one eye on me all the time. I hope she will be waiting to flush some more when we meet again.

She is buried down in our meadow, with a redwood headstone, reading: "Daisy Mae, A Good Girl".
