Ive had 2 Ruger Americans, a Ranch, and this Magnum, and spent quite a bit of time with a standard American, and Ive liked all of them. The American actions are at this point my favorite cheap actions, and the rifles are generally my favorite cheap rifles.

The do have some things that can be made better with a little work. Polishing the bolt, and using a grease on it, gets rid of the zzzzirrt sound and feel they have as they cycle.
Opening up the lip on the front of stock removes the most common touch point.
The triggers tend to be pretty good, my RARs was excellent. The one on my Magnum was a little longer and kinda gritty compared to the others I've used. Disassembling, cleaning, and light polishing removed all the grit, but the pull is longer than I prefer. I still haven't come up with a good way to adjust engagement on the stock trigger.

Anyway, the one thing that I've not been able to remedy is the feel of the stocks, they just don't feel good to me. My RAR and the standard American are both light enough that it didn't really bother me, the Magnum on the other hand is heavy for an American at 9ish lbs scoped, and I really didn't like the stock feel on it.

So to remedy that I had one of the sellers on eBay order a stock from Boyd's for me. Reason I went that route, is ordering direct from Boyd's cost me an extra 20 in shipping and handling.

The stock arrived yesterday, and I happily tried to dry fit everything.

Turns out the inletting on the stock was close to perfect, but the corners on the inletting for the recoil lugs and magazine well we're rounded. I had to spend about an hour cleaning up the corners to get the action and lugs to fit together correctly, and for the magazine to go in and out smoothly. Since I was going to all the effort I decided to put pillars under the lugs to help with keeping tension and not squishing the stock.

After getting it all epoxied up, I installed a short section of rail on the front, and used 5/8" cable stops to extend the lop about 3/4"

The rail is from the forend of my AR build and has two rounds studs on the bottom that fit into Keymod holes and a socket for a qd sling swivel. I used a 3/8 forstner bit to relieve the stock for all three. Then made a new screw hole for the rear attachment screw, and ran the front thru an existing sling swivel stud hole, and into a block of hdpe.

The cable stops just act as spacers for the factory pad, if I find issues with it I'll probably just fit a 1" pad.

My one major complaint about the stock is the rear of the stock doesn't follow the profile of the action. I'll probably fill it a bit and profile it later if it really bugs me.

List of parts in the build. Most were covered in a previous thread, the stocks really the last piece of this puzzle.

Ruger American Magnum in 7mm Remington.
Boyd's Pepper Laminate ProVarmint (guess tacticool, wasn't cutting it) stock. 3/4" spacers, and 3" section of Keymod rail.
Vg6 Precision 762 Gamma muzzle brake, mostly cause it looks cool, tho the recoil reduction is nice for range use. I also have a linear compensator that it wears while hunting.
Athlon Argos 4-20x50 with ahmr1 reticle. Sitting in Warne rings, on the stock rail.
Knock off Atlas Bipod....tho hopefully I'll be able to replace it with the real thing before too long.

B&C is making one for long actions now, but I don't know if it would fit the magnums. They advertise it at 2 lbs, which is 1/2 lb heavier than factory and at about $285 MSRP. Once they get into the system they may be discounted some.

I'm sure they will eventually offer it for short actions and if they do I MAY consider one for my 6.5 CM. The factory stocks do nothing aesthetically, but I can't complain about the accuracy. And I do tend to prefer rifles on the lighter side. I keep asking myself why do I want to try to fix something that ain't broke. And I only paid $389 OTD for the rifle. That makes it hard to justify $285 for a stock that will be 1/2 lb heavier.

But just a heads up for anyone considering a replacement stock for theirs, there is another option.

Thats cool! I hadnt seen that B&C had a stock coming out for the long action American. They should get some business there. As far as i know only they, and boyds, offer an option for the longs.
Hopefully they will offer some of the other styles. Had i known about the B&Cs, and had it been offered in their M40 design, id probably have spent the extra 100 bucks on that instead.
Hard to say tho, I may not have, as I was actually TRYING for a heavy gun on this one. Either way, its always good when there are more options!

From what i can tell there's not a lot of difference between a long action American, and a Magnum action American, besides the barrel on the RAM being the heaviest of the bunch, pretty much the same as the RPRs.

looks great  loonwulf. about time i see a boyds stock i like. how do u like the Athlon what does it compare to. have u worked up a load yet for it. like to see one off those cows wacked with this.

Im digging the Athlon. Ive shot it side by side with a Vortex Viper HST, and one of the big Trijicons, but only at about 100yds. I found it equal to either in image quality, but the turrets are squishier than either. I still havent gotten to compare it to my buddies MK4 LR, but that would be the only other higher end scope i could get my hands on right now. I like it better than anything i currently own. Im also looking to add one of the higher end ones at some point, most likely the Midas HMR, just because it has covered turrets and those are a must for me.

Im still using the same load ive used in my other 3 7mms, 73gr of retumbo behind a 162 amax. I need to get out with it now that its got its new stock, but best i think ive done previously was a little over 1" 10 shot group with 7 rounds into about 5/8" hole, and 3 that were LIKELY induced fliers (but i cant prove that till I have a chance to try again). Honestly the stock issue has been keeping me from taking this gun to the range for more than just making sure it hit where i expected it to after messing with the brake, linear comp, and bare muzzle.

Ive shot 5 cows with a 7mm STW launching 175SGKs, and 2 with the 7mag that became my .375, launching the Amax, my buddy dumped 2 with the same 7mag on one of the hunts i was using the STW.
Unfortunately this one will likely not get a chance to go cow hunting, they are closing the hunt this winter I believe, and if on some off chance i get to go again ill take the .375.
I have a huge amount of confidence in the 7mag tho, still my favorite round.

good to here the scope is good the 300 price tag is nice to how is the eye relief on it ?. i love the 7 mag to just i dont need one yet lol. if i can drop a deer at 540 with a 7 mauser then 7mag is nothing lol. ..ps. i dont relay shoot that far i just happen to be buy my old shooting range coming in for lunch on day hunting and saw this nice buck right next to a large rock i have be shooting for many years and lots with the 7mm. no wind aimed where i shot the month before. and droped this nice 8 pointer.

Yeah I def consider it a good buy. Cameraland has the one I'm using (that's where I bought mine) for 249.

I went the other way, fell into the 7mag back in highschool. I WANT a few, ok most, of the other 7mms, but always end up with another Rem Mag.

Yeah, been there with the STW. I was forming cases from 300wby to save money
The one box of factory ammo I bought was something like 90 bucks.
