Actually the Civil War was the beginning of the end of swords/sabers as a primary cavalry weapon relegating it to the ceremonial role in America. In fact during the Civil War very few cavalry clashes resulted in the use of the sword as long range muskets, carbines and revolvers made cavalry charges suicidal at best.Wrong again.
In the case of Cavalry, the weapon used was primary a sword. The U. S. advanced to the handgun vice the sword. That use easily qualifies as a 'special use'. One notes that since the U. S. Cavalry was motorized, handguns have been used much less for strategic or tactical victory.
