Random Gun Pics...let’s see how random we can make it

A new S&W 4506 after a few hours scrubbing the biohazard off of it. This gun was GROSS!!!

Either of those would also affect height, that looks more like craftsmanship than shim to fit.

I would have guessed they were larger than they are now when first installed and the method used to tighten them was removed as they were brought down level with the surface, then the slot was created, along with the art work.

That's the way I understand it is done. Screws are tightened down with a fair amount of material on the "head". Witness marks are struck and the head is ground and screw slots are cut to reflect.
