Range Bag/Toolbox

I've been frequenting the shooting range more often ever since I got out of college and into the work force. My little range bag is getting to be overfilled now with all my extra gear: ear protection (a few pairs of plugs, some disposables, pair of muffs) some screwdrivers and allen wrenches, trigger pull gauge, chronometer, spotting scope, magazines, ammo boxes, etc.

Anyone else lugging a bunch of shooting accessories to the range? Whatcha using to carry it all?

You're right to call it a toolbox. Fifteen dollar plastic toolbox from Walmart. Compartments for ammo & little stuff (plugs, etc) & big spaces for cased guns. It's actually about time for me to graduate to the even bigger, $20 (gasp!) toolbox; those 'tools' do tend to accumulate!

I keep and transport most of my stuff in a size big Bucket Boss tool bag. They're less $ than a "range bag". The inside and outside of the bag have pockets that are convienent for extra mags, tools, etc., etc. The one I use has a wide top making it easy to see what's buried where inside.
As to durability I keep mine so loaded with ammo and shooting rests that I lean to one side when I carry it. No signs of the fabric ripping or the stitching letting go yet.

I now use a 24" plastic toolbox I picked up for about $12 at Lowe's. It handles most of the smaller stuff, tools, and cleaning supplies, plus some ammo. I bring more ammo and cased handguns inside a small knapsack that I used to use to carry my books when I was in school.

i went w/ a blackhawk range bag. it was expensive but i'll be using it a long time and they will replace it if it tears or a zipper gives out or the velcro wears out, whatever.
dad always said to buy once and buy smart.

Handguns & ammo in a soft-side tol bag from Home Depot. Tools & cleaning stuff in a nice tackle box from WallyWorld. Got both for half the price of a "good" range bag.

I saw the same bag in the gun section at Walmart, same bag again in the tool section at Lowe's. Same price. Has pockets all along the outside for ear plugs, gloves (I use golf gloves), and pockets on the inside (on pocket is perfect for eye protective glasses). Works perfectly for my needs and a heck of a lot less expensive.

19" ZAG plastic tool box from Home Depot for all of my cleaning and most of my repair tools. A few spare mags and clips, rags, plugs, multi-tool, targets, etc. Instead of a shooting bag, I use a backpack or two to tote around my guns. I can fit at least four handguns in their original cases in a 2400 cubic inch backpack. Plus, they have all of those additional pockets and is a little more comfortable to carry around using both shoulder straps than a single sling bag. Also, much cheaper than a shooting bag of comparable capacity and gauranteed for life if you choose one of the major backpack compamies (some actually have their packs made by the same people who manufacture their competitior's pack).


For ear muffs, I've found just wearing them on my head or around my neck saves room for other stuff in the tool box and backback.

I use one of those workshop-on-wheels you can buy at Home Depot. A couple of people laughed at first ("Hey, he's here to fix his car!"), but they're the ones carrying multiple bags and boxes.

Mine has a regular tool box on top for tools, field cleaning kits, mags, ammo, etc. Under the tool box is a pullout drawer where I store two pairs of muffs and two pairs of glasses. In the bottom large drawer, I store my rifle rest w/ bags, spotting scope, duct tape, and a beach towel. There's a spot on each side where I tie rolled up target pads. That, plus rifle cases.

Works for me. Rangemaster liked it.

I use a tool bag from Walmart too -- "Rooster" or something. It is very heavy duty, lots of interior and exterior pockets, heaby duty handles and zippers and it looks pretty decent. About $15 I think.

Only thing I take to the range besides my guns and ammo and magazines are a mag loading accessory and some ears.

Most of the weight is water.

Maybe I'll take a small cleaning kit in a (tactical Eagle Industries?) shaving kit some day?

Boy this is a loaded question.

I have a big multi-level, multi-compartmentalized, tactical black (& yellow) toolbox with a flip up handle and wheels I got it at Wally Martinez' store.

SIde note: In a pinch the extra large portion at the bottom can be filled with ice and bee...um, I mean soda waters for long range sessions.

I put all my little pieces, spare parts, cleaning supplies, odd ball ammo, specialized tools, and stuff I don't use often in it. I used to drag it to the range all the time. It only goes now if I going to spend the day with multiple guns.

I also have two yellow plastic tool boxes, one dedicated to pistol, the other is equipped out of the rolling gun shop as needed.

Then there is the cheap Hoppes canvas bag that is also available from Wally Martinez. It really holds all I need. Couple of guns ammo, eyes & ears. Staple gun is always in the truck. Throw in a long gun and some ammo and you're there.

For personal use, usually a Backpack with handguns and ammo. I'd have to check there might be a Otis ckeaning kit in it. Sometimes just an old pharmaceutical canvas tote bag.

People are used to me with a backpack, raises no questions in coming and going in apt setting.

At the private range, I throw everything in a 5 gal bucket.
I have different colors of backpacks, hate to get to class and OOPS..."Please turn to page 45 ACP" Darn books weight more than guns and ammo.

I don't have tools or such, once I set the adj sights...allen wrench disapppeared. Guns always work, I just shoot 'em. Kimbers, Caspians, various Mil-specs, and of course K frames...

hmmm.. interesting idea Smoke (Eyeing tactical black and yellow rolling tool case with flip up handles and deep bottom compartment...) have to try that compared to the big old carpet bag for a trip to the range..

I use an older canvas camcorder bag. It is well padded, has multiple pockets (inside and out), and moveable partions inside (uses velcro). I only carry my XD9 in it, but it would hold another plus plenty of WallyWorld Whitebox ammo and all my accessories! My wife and I yard sale a lot. I see old junk camcorders in their cases all the time, cheap!

And use CLC's #1135 as a Stage Bag. Has steel reinforced moth that opens wide like a satchel. Easy to find anything already in the bag and can simply toss empty mags, etc. in plus many outside pockets.

Depends on why I'm going to the range. If I'm going to test some loads, I'll bring the rests and bags, notebook, pens, ammo, targets, towels, some stuff to eat / drink, extra ear & eye protection, sunblock, etc, in a soft-sidded black fishing gear bag, with the chrony and tripod on a cammie carry all I got in the Corps.

If I'm just shootin', I've got my logbook, pencils, targets, ears, in my drag bag, and some MRE's, first aid kit, and a 1 quart canteen in my 782 gear, which also acts as my shooting platform. Now if I can only figure out how the belt shrunk so much since I was in!!!

I use the Large brown rolling toolbox from Lowes/Eagle and it holds most stuff, then there's the daypack for the pistols and the toolbox for the less frequently used stuff that gets left in the truck.

Right now I'm using a Bagmaster Pro Shooters Lg/Md (?) bag and a black Shooter's Box, $25, I bought at Oshman's Sporting Goods. The box holds all of my range gear (wrenches, fluids, cleaners, staples/stapler, tape/pasters, eye/ear protection, rods/tips/jags) and the bag holds my pistols and ammo.

While the shooter's box does it's job well, the bag is just too small for anything more than a stage bag....and it probably wouldn't be good for that as there's no magazine storage, just a big open middle. I'm looking to combine the two and that means either a Waller bag ( www.wallerandsons.com ) or a Green Mountain bag ( www.greenmtsports.com ) . Kinda expensive, but worth the money if it makes life a little easier. The GM bag is specifically designed for shooters, by shooters. That's nice.

For brief visits I use a small camera bag that is barely large enough for 2 pistols & holsters, muffs & magazines.

For longer sessions, for the past year I have been using a wheeled bowling bag with lots of external pockets. It's large enough to hold guns, holsters, muffs and magazines for eight, plus training aids (rubber knife, water pistols for non-guns, etc. By California law, ammunition must be carried separately, and I use a Dillon "border shift" bag for that. The bowling bag has a long pocket that,s great for targets, and will almost completely contain rolled shlhouette paper targets.

The wheels and telescoping handle are a great convenience. See also earlier posts by BamBam and Smoke; looks like they have good solutions.
