Range Charges!

Does your range charge you to bring in commercially boxed ammunition?

My local range charges a fee of $2 per box of commercially loaded ammo if you bring it with you to the range.

No Hand loads allowed...

And last but not least, my small peev also is the range ammo they sell is out of line pricing. I would do more business with them, because I really do not like shopping at wally world....but I can buy 2 boxes of 9mm and pay the $4 and be at same price of ONE box of there range ammo...which is American Eagle.

My main range is the Carson range - no fee for anything! I also frequent the indoor range over in Grass Valley (CA), no fee for bringing in your own ammo (great range, btw), and then Safe Shot in Reno (also indoor). They prohibit ammo brought in, you must buy their lead-free and over priced stuff (so I only go there a couple times a year). I've also been to the range near Danville (CA) a couple times as my cousin leaves nearby. Large facility (108 lines), no fee for bringing in ammo.

Before I say anything about how I amy feel about that pricing nonsense (oops, too late) I'd like to know what the basic charges for shooting are.

Yeah, I do not go there much....but one of nicest ranges around...and closest to my home.

I always want to say something, but just let it go!

Oh, ...and you can not bring a partial box either, I had one box with fifteen out of it in a magazine of Beretta IN plastic hard case.....They set that box aside...emptied my magazine and said I could get it back as I left....

And you give them your money why?

I would write a letter to the owner, explaining why I am not going to his range anymore, and include receipts from the other range I went to for the previous month, so he could see that he was loosing money.

And I certinly would not let these strangers man handle my gear.

for your gun. Literally. Inform them to stop immediately, loudly, and let them know just
how close they came to starting stuff.

My local range has one rule: No steel core ammo.

They even let me shoot some Federal Premium ammo with Barnes TTSX at 3400fps. I guess the backstop is pretty robust. The Caldwell A500 armor plate target says no all copper bullets and impact velocity below 3000 fps.

The Range I frequent does not allow Steel core, or aluminum cased ammo. This is to recycle brass. They can get a magnet to pick up Steel Cases but don't want to begin to try and figure out how to sort the aluminum out of brass.
Their prices seem exorbitant to me but that is why I'm joining a club near where my Grandsons live. I can then take them shooting and have less expensive range fees.

guys, that range may have been the victim of a shister lawyer suit for so called unsuitable ammunition. there may have been an accident with an injury that caused this. but you are right don't go there any more.

I don't see how charging a surcharge for bringing in your own ammo, nor fondling other peoples equipment could help prevent a lawsuit from unsuitable ammunition.

What that range is doing is taking advantage of it customers.

that sounds like pure greed, not concern for safety...i'd only put up with it if the range fee was so low that it was still a good deal even with BYO boxed ammo...i'd just consider it a supplemental range fee...but *only* if it was still cheaper than going to the next range down the road...

There range fee is about average... i believe $10 for 1/2 hour??? I dont remember it being a surprise or an issue! But American Eagle at over $20 a box

I remembered that..and a fee to bring my own ammo...

Last time I went....Wow! I just checked a range report (last time I went there-I posted here on THR).. and that was January 2011...

If I am not mistaken price fluctuates seasonally? (but not 100% pos. on that)

I would definitely find another place to shoot. I've heard of many ranges ripping off people with their requirement to buy their range ammo, but never been to one. I'm just fine with the ranges around me, even though the best one is the farthest.
Indoor, (15yrds, handgun only) 6 blocks away - $12 all day
Outdoor (100yd), 8 miles - $10 all day
Outdoor (State operated), 90 miles - $8 all day

The range I go to only allows their ammo in their rentals (fair enough) and specifies no steel in ammo at all, and prohibits Wolf by name. Otherwise we can shoot anything up to 30/06 & x54R. The written rule is take your brass only. I pay $350/year for the wife & me, unlimited range time, free rentals.

Another range I go to only specifies "No armor piercing, no .50BMG." That's where I go to shoot milsurp x54R out of the MoNag. It's $14/hr the first hour, $10/hr after that. Any brass is fair game.

When I was living in upstate NY the closest range was a private range with a gated entrance. They charged $18 for the calendar year. They had a 50 yard pistol/rim fire range, a 200 yard rifle lane, and a 400 yard rifle lane. Only rule was ensure all rounds hit the backstop. I could shoot all the steel core ammo has fast has I wanted has long has I followed their one rule. I really liked that place.

I'm a member at 2 ranges. I pay me yearly dues of $35 to one club and $75 to the other Club. I can bring any gun I want and shoot any ammo I want. No restrictions, no fees.

$75 a year, no nonsense, no range schmafety officer, no inspection silliness, no ammo restrictions.

Join a club with a range and get treated like an adult, rental ranges are for chumps.

The range I go to only charges $5 for a half hour and $3 for each additional half hour, but I bring all my own stuff so I don't pay for ammo, targets, eyes, ears or guns.

The range I use in SC charges 5 bucks for all day and I bring my reloads in a plastic baggie. The only time you have to buy their ammo is when you rent one of their guns. And it costs me a buck each for eyes, ears, and target. So 8 bucks unless I shoot up more than one target.

Now we charge a whopping $25 per year for a family membership. Still a great place to shoot.
