I was thrilled with the range report results on my Ruger Flattop 357 and AA #7.

Love that ball powder, going back to my WW296 days, so I got some AA #5 to handload some 9mm rounds seeing how AA #7 performed and metered previously in 357 MAG.

The specifics:
Ruger 9e barrel length 4.14“
X-Treme 124 gr. HPCB RN (Heavy Plate, Concave Base)
Accurate AA#5 powder
CCI 500 primers
Speer brass, once fired
OAL 1.133“
Distance to target 7 YDS.

I loaded up 6 rounds at 6 different powder charges, 5.2, 5.4, 5.6, 5.8, 6.0, 6.2. I boogered up two cases, one 5.2 charge, the other 5.4 by not flaring the case enough after I already loaded all the powder charges so those are 5 shot rounds on paper. These are all thrown powder charges from an old Lyman No.55 with a home made baffle. I used a light taper crimp.

I started off getting the barrel warm with a few magazines of factory rounds then started loading my handload while the wife was blasting away with a SR22. I rested my forearms and began putting rounds down range. Right from the get go I noticed now much lighter the recoil was compared to factory. All the rounds functioned flawlessly at each charge weight. There was no excessive pressure signs after inspection and ejected cases didn’t fly into the next zip code.

I’ll let the pictures speak to the accuracy of each charge weight but after shooting the first two charge weights I felt a little disappointed. Things really picked up with the 5.6 rounds and it looks like I hit the sweet spot with 5.8 at a little under 1.25“. 6.0 opened up a little to a hair over 1.6“ but is most likely on me and my piss-poor eye sight than the loads. I wouldn’t hesitate to make a run of 5.8 or 6.0 for our everyday practice rounds.

These are light and pretty clean loads in my handgun.

Please use reasonable precautions and work up loads for your weapon of choice. In no way am I or THR endorsing the use of these loads in any way.

Thanks for the report! :)

While AA #5 isn't my 1st choice for 9mm, I do like it and prefer it over several other powders. Great in the metering category and clean too!

Working with some plinking/target loads in 357 mag, I want to see how AA #5 does in that caliber.

One of my loads is AA5, 5.9gr with an RMR 124gr RN loaded to 1.135. Shoots good for me.

For a nice medium 357 mag load try 7.7 gr of AA No. 5 with 158 gr SWC it's one of my favorite out of my Smith Wesson model 66-8. As for 9mm I can't comment never tried No. 5 .

My plinking round, and also used for steel challenge is;
Various lead 124&125gr bullets over 5.3gr AA#5. This is a very accurate round with light recoil in my Browning Hi Power.

I have never tried AA#5 in the 9mm but I see no reason why it wouldn't work well. It us in the right burn rate range.

I have used W231, HS-6, Power Pistol and Longshot in the 9mm, all seem to work well.

Thanks for your results! I'm actually switching over from 158 gr. to 140 gr. bullets. But I still have a few hundred 158 gr. JSP bullets to work through. :)

You're welcome.

Being out of handloading for awhile, I diligently have been reading THR to catch up with the latest insights. Not seeing much info here on AA#5 powder I hope I can give back to someone that's thinking of trying it out. As you say, "Great in the metering category and clean too!" is what attracts me to Accurate powder.

Yep, I'll settle in on 5.9gr and make a large run of it. A tenth off either way and I'm still good to go. ;)

I have a couple pounds of AA#5 that I bought for Makarov loads. I was happy with the results so I am going to try it in 9mm as well. It seemed to get better accuracy towards the mid to high end charge weight so I am going to start in the middle for 9mm.

My thanks for the report too.

I'll have to give that a try.

Also, good show on the advice to work up the loads.
