You can shoot surplus, just that certain types are verbotten such as Indian, Paki and South African. I have some surplus Winchester that I shoot and it is just fine. It is of course getting impossible to find any good surplus anymore. Also a letter in my box says no steel cased polymer coated rounds (Wolf).

I also like the weight of the AP4 upper. When shooting off hand there is about the same amount of muzzle rise as with my M4 in .223. This makes follow up shots real easy. Of course I weight lift daily so the 13 pound rifle does not feel very heavy to me.

Marshall - I get similar groups at a rest from 200 yards with A2 sights. I really like that gun. 300 yards+ I just can't see well enough to make it happen. But even at 500 yards most of the rounds are on the paper. What kind of groups are you seeing at 500 with the 42X scope?

I rarely crank it up to 42X, mostly low 20's. I use the 42x for spotting :D

The farthest I have shot at paper is 200 yards. I shot 10" steel plates out to 550. 308 drops quite a bit at that range and I have to use the 2nd crosshair on the NP1 reticle at 20X. My next time out I am going to learn my elevation settings based on the ranging retical and my load.

We have a local range that goes to 300ish yards and I am going to try to get some groups there soon.

I took the trigger mechanism apart and spent about an hour polishing everything. It's much better but I still miss my Remington :)
I bought some Hodgdon Benchmark to try out and took some loads to the range.

Here are two 100 yard groups on some paper Javelinas and Ducks. :D
For reference, they are about 1" tall:

I spent the rest of the time shooting at the steel gong at 300 yards. The barrel seems to be breaking in nicely. At a little over 100 rounds the copper fouling is very little at 10 round intervals between cleaning.

Thanks guys for the input.

Aubie, will the JP springs create a light firing pin strike condition? I am using Federal Match Primers which are pretty sensitive but if I change I don't want any issues.

Just when you think you can't be excited by a new gun...

Wow, that is a nice gun!

Had no idea they came in steel flavor too.

DOC2005, I noticed the magpul MIAD grip on your LR308, I have the same steel upper and recently noticed that the rear takedown detent spring kinda slips into the grip area and the detent does not hold the rear takedown pin hard enough, have you noticed this issue? I was thinking of filling that area of the grip with epoxy to give the takedown detent spring a flat surface from which to push. Thanks in advance.

Here's my favorite. Since this pic I have changed out the scope mounts and got a new bag and of course more mags....no sense in having an auto with only two mags!
Put about 200 rounds through it a couple weeks ago and got it hot enough that I could not hold the front handguard. It loves my reloads but hates African surplus. When it is cold is the SA ammo will not cycle at least once per 20 rounds. When hot it would not cycle on every round. I gave the SA ammo to my brother for his PTR91, maybe his will like it more. Besides my reloads are much better anyways. Guess I should have taken some pics of the blown out xring. :)

LR-308/AR-10 Build

Anyone out there have any info on the LR-308/AR-10 chambered in magnum calibers (.270/.300 WSM)? I'm was in the process of purchasing individual components for a .308 and came across a company chambering several magnum calibers. I am curious to know if an aluminum receiver would hold up. The barrels I am talking about seem too good to be true. Any advice would be appreciated.

Marshall... Where was the 26" barrel on the DMPS web site. I tried to put together a rifle and the longest I saw was a 24"
