Finally got to take the Springfield XD 40 Service model to the range today that I picked up a week or so ago. I have had a couple of the earlier XD 9's since they first came out a few years ago, but saw the 40 at a local shop and it just kept calling to me until I finally gave in. The XD 9's have been flawless and very accurate, so I was expecting good things from the 40.

And I was not disappointed :D Put a box each of the WWB FMJ's (bonus pack) and HP's that Walmart sells through it. Outdoor range, windy, rain threatening, insects biting the @#$% out me, and shooting at NRA 25 ft targets from about 30-33 ft, it would put the shots into the 10 ring with monotonous regularity :) No failures of any kind, dropped the empties into nice little piles, if anything shot the hollow points more accurately than the ball. Two thumbs up!

One of the best you can buy hands down...

I picked up a Springfield XD Service in .40 cal back a couple of years ago. I shot over 400 rounds through it in a Scott Warren IDPA class using Winchester USA 180gr. HP and FMJ the week it was purchased. It is an excellent pistol. The action and ergonomics were the best I had ever encountered for an out of the box auto. There were only 2 things that I found as an issue: I rode the slide lock with my thumb which prevented slide lock on an empty mag... my error, easily fixed with a grip change and training. The recoil buffer spring was beaten and worn by the end of the class. :( I fixed this by ordering one of the full length XD guiderods from Wilson's and using a 22# Colt officers Model recoil spring from Wolff. This corrected the problem. The XD mags are well made and have STRONG mag springs. I kept mine loaded for 3 months to break the springs in. Overall one of the best pistols to own and an incredible bargain. :D

XD's Rock

I agree with Joe, I've had my XD-40 for about 4 years now and it has been totally awesome. They are very accurate, 100% reliable, priced right, awesome ergonomics, at least for me, and I've got 3000 rounds through mine, no problems at all.:D I've also read very few other comments about trouble with the XD series, this seems to indicate good reliability across the board.
