Well, I had to go on vacation this weekend...

The wife visited an art show in CA and wanted a travel companion. None of my coworkers would go with her even though I offered them money! :D ;) Ok, maybe she'll never read that :uhoh:

Anyway, I found that there was a rental range near where we were staying--problem was they wouldn't allow me to rent if I showed up alone. I posted a question about that policy online and Beetle Bailey volunteered that the range was in his area and he would be happy to show up.

Turned out that "in his area" meant over an hour's drive! At 1:15 yesterday, I was standing in the lobby of On Target indoor shooting range in Laguna Niguel (near Lake Forest, CA) when Beetle Bailey and Bam-Bam31 walked in with a PLETHORA of guns and ammunition.

A couple of hours later, I had shot most of their guns, used up some of their ammo and targets, talked about a LOT of gun stuff and spent a very enjoyable afternoon shooting with a couple of really nice fellow THR members.

On Target is a pretty nice range--other than "no rentals to single party walk-ins", "no shotguns" and "no faster than 1 shot every second" rules it was reasonably relaxed. Ventilation was great but without the "blown away" feeling some ranges can give you. When I got back to the hotel room, I found almost no smoke residue in my nose. Pretty impressive for spending a couple of hours shooting at an indoor range. Their rental policy is flexible--they allow you to swap out guns as many times as you like and still pay only one rental fee. I shot a SIG P228, a Springfield XD 9mm, and a Beretta 92FS INOX. :D

The SIG shot pretty good. I've never shot a SIG before so this was a perfect opportunity to try one out. Using the range reloads, it showed it was capable of very good accuracy--I managed one 5 shot group at 25 yards that was a bit under 3". The DA pull was smooth, I noted no negatives with the SA pull and I had no problems with the gun overall. I've never been a big fan of the SIGS due primarily to their price, but I have to say that's about the only complaint I can make.

The XD wasn't my favorite. The trigger was uncomfortable for me, and although BamBam31 was able to make a one hole group with the gun at 12-15 yards, the accuracy just wasn't there for me. After shooting awhile I had one failure to extract and then a couple of rounds later the trigger stopped resetting. That didn't improve my view of the gun. It's a range rental so who knows what abuse it's put up with--it certainly needed a cleaning (at least) in my view--but the failure still left a funny, if not a bad, taste in my mouth. Not sure exactly what went wrong. When I took it back to the desk to exchange it the attendant tried to break it down for a diagnostic and it wouldn't come apart. :(

The 92FS was predictable--but I was really trying to finish up the ammo I had bought at this point. This gun wasn't as accurate as I expected based on my experience with others of its kind. Could be hard use as a rental, could be it didn't like the range reloads they were using, could be I was getting tired by then.

Beetle Bailey brought a couple of CZ pistols that he was kind enough to let me shoot--I'm afraid that little test-run is going to cost me some cash. His full-size CZ-75 was extraordinarily accurate using American Eagle ammunition. I shot the best 5 shot group at 25 yards that I've managed in several years. Gonna have to get me one of them! I've already started shopping... His 75 compact was equally as nice with a trigger that was actually a bit slicker--perhaps from more use.

I also got a chance to "exercise" a couple of BamBam-31's treasures, a tricked out CZ SP01 and a customized Glock 17. VERY nice machines there, but my fingers are so used to heavy trigger pulls that these tuned guns were almost too good for me. Maybe if he'd have let me take one home so I could get used to it... ;)

Sorry, I know that was a bit long, but I left a BUNCH of stuff out. :D

Well, heck, I was gonna bring more but I didn't want to have to make two trips from the parking lot to the lobby :D . I guess it's kind of a unusual first impression to see me walk in weighted down with all that stuff, but hey, we used everything except the tools and cleaning kit I bring just in case.

As I said earlier, I've learned a great deal from the enormous collective wisdom on THR and I just looked at it as an opportunity to give back to one of the members that I feel represents the shooting community very well. Also, it's nice to meet THR members in person after reading their prose online. And besides, it's fun to go shooting.

Oh, and JohnKSa, thanks for giving me a better idea of what my CZ75B Tactical is capable of. I knew it was pretty accurate, I just didn't know how accurate. I enjoyed the shooting and especially enjoyed the company. Next time your wife drags you out to SoCal, maybe we can schedule a trip to a rifle range. . . ;)

JohnKSa is good people, is all I've got to say. :)

(And a damn fine shot, too! His five shot offhand group with the CZ was just over an inch and a half, folks....at TWENTY-FIVE yards! :what: )

John, if you buy a CZ, I'll buy an XD. :D

Shhh...listen....the Cult of CZ beckons....

Very interesting. Sounds like you guys had fun!

I had no idea that you'd never shot a SIG pistol. Nice to know you liked it! You know, you can score a used SIG pretty cheap. ;)

I am, however, intrigued by how well you did with (and how much you seem to like) the CZ. I still haven't managed to get my hands on one - maybe I should make that my weekend project and see if I can find a place that has one for rent.

Anyways, thanks for the range report!

I love my CZ-75 tu-tone, and I've noticed that CZs come from the factory very tight and with very stiff triggers but if you shoot them, they smooth out quite nicely.

I did get to shoot a single action CZ someone had at the range, I think it was an SP01? That was one of the nicest factory single action triggers I have EVER shot...it was so ridiculously nice. I have to get one.

Yea, CZs are a disease. :scrutiny:

Cousin Mike,

As always, some good advise.

JohnKSa, Mike is right. If you are patient, and look around, you can get a good deal on a used SIG. I have seen used Police 226’s that were factory rebuilt in the $400 range. I think that’s a pretty good deal.

I was a 1911 person most of my life, then I got a refurbed Sig229. It is my CCW and I have 3 other Sigs now.:)

JohnKSa,

I have a personal pistol policy (PPP) - never own 2 of the same model/brand. So far I have done very well with this. . . . . . until I shot a CZ-75. Sometime in the near future, I will be forced to add another CZ to my stable, probably a PO-1. I have an incredibly sweet Pre-B CZ-75 in 9mm.

I have top shelf autos, Glock, Sig, CZ, Ruger, Colt, Benelli, Star, etc., but the CZ is different.

Sounds like you got the better end of that deal ;) Got to shoot someone else's ammo, get someone else's guns dirty & still keep the misses happy...good job! :D

Gent that he is, John snuck out and picked up all our range fees while Beetle and I were cluelessly blasting away. Again, good people. Thanks again, John. :)

(My delicate Chinese sensibilities, however, are screaming: "Got beat to the bill by a Gwai Loh!" :fire: ) :D

Have to agree with 10-Ring. There's no question that I came out ahead on the deal! ;) :D (Especially when you consider that I wouldn't have been able to shoot at all if they hadn't shown up.)

In fact, I actually felt a twinge of guilt (ok, it was a very slight twinge) as I pulled up to the hotel 10 minutes after leaving the range. I know Beetle Bailey and BamBam-31 were on the road for at least an hour after that...

Hey, it's ALL GOOD! We are a brotherhood here. It's a lot of fun putting faces to the names we talk to all the time! :D

Gah! I'm even more confused now...:banghead:
I'm trying to decide between a used sig and and a CZ for my next purchase. Both feel great in the hand, but haven't shot either. Wish I had the coin to buy both but that isn't going to happen for a bit.
Oh well sounds like either would be a good purchase.
Thanks for the report,

Now to find one or the other before they're all bought up for christmas:eek:

Well, when you think about it, fun as it was, shooting the guns was gravy. It was a pleasure to meet JohnKSa and help him out a bit. And I did get to shoot an XD9. I'd been trying to decide between an XD9 and a G17 (there's only room for one plastic abomination in my safe :uhoh: :neener: ) so it's good to get a chance to shoot one, if only briefly .

The XD9 points much better for me than does the G17 and the stock trigger is a bit better as well. I had no problems with the tiny grip safety and that safe-action safety thingy on the trigger wasn't annoying. Also, unlike some Glocks, the XD didn't throw brass at my face.

However, for me personally, I think I'm gonna go with the Glock. Most of the things I don't like about Glocks can be fixed. The stock trigger and sights can easily be improved and I'm told adjusting the extractor can cure the "brass in my face" syndrome. That just leaves the less than ideal grip angle.

The XD is a good gun but it didn't wow me and since either one I buy is gonna get customized anyways, I think I'll go with the Glock. See, John? You helped me as well.

I've never shot a SIG before so this was a perfect opportunity to try one out.

Heck, I brought a SIG P225 for you to try as well. It spent most of the afternoon just sitting there lonely and all, waiting for someone to ask it to dance. It's a 9mm so you won't be betraying your favorite cartridge either. . .

As I have said before: "if you don't own a CZ, your collection is not complete!".

I picked up my first CZ early this year; a used 75B 'duo-tone' in 40 S&W and just recently got another; 75B Compact also in 40 S&W that supposedly had a failure to feed issue in like new condition. It is actually new! in case with test target, snap caps, warranty paperwork, 2 factory mags and cleaning brush for....... Ready for this?

$200.00!

They have one CZ40P left at this price also but it is not approved here in the Commie state.

If you want one check out www.whittakersguns.com. They also have a used full size 75B in 40 cal for $319 I believe it was amongst many others.

Tell it I was all danced out that day so it won't feel bad. ;) :D

blackedoutharley,

The URL for Whittaker's is www.whittakerguns.com

When you add that extra 's' before the 'g', you get some odd link that doesn't work right.

Thanks for the link, they have a lot of neat stuff...

Have you had a chance to shoot this gun yet? I seen they had a couple of them a few weeks ago and was really tempted to take a chance on one but I already had a great deal going on a Witness Elite Stock and funds were low.

You know I will.

Probably be after the first of the year--if I live through the holidays again! ;)

Got the in-laws coming to visit. I can't imagine what it would be like if I didn't actually like them. :D

I have a xd and 2 cz's life is good.
my cz75 pre-b is sweet and a great/accurate shooter.I just picked up a cz40B but haven't made it out to the range yet. .

The CZ-75 arrived today...

A nickel plated CZ-75B--out the door cost was $460. It came with a 5 shot test target shot @ 25 meters that measured just under 2".

It also came with two mags, a mag loader, a cable lock, cleaning rod and cleaning brush, two snap-caps and several replacement "primers" for the snap-caps.

I'll add its range report to this thread when I finally get it to the range.

Wow you guys sure sound like you had a great time. We should try to organize shoots in local metro areas, maybe we could even get a deal on range time or something.
