Weapon - Newly purchased Rock River Arms AR-15 CAR with mid length handgaurd.

Accessories - GG&G A2 Style Flip Up Rear Site
EOTech 512.A65 Holographic Weapon Site
Hogue Mono grip for AR-15
Uncle Mikes 3 Point Tactical Sling

Ammunition - A223B NATO .223 SS109 (62gr)

Arrived at Buffalo Range at 9 am sharp with friend Jim and his Bushmaster CAR. Set up under the canopy at the 50 yard mark. Proceeded to sight in both the EOTech then iron sights at this range. Once the holographic sight was dialed in it was like cheating at this range. Also shot the Bushy with iron sights. I shot my RRA better with iron sights than the Bushy. Longer sight radius on my weapon most likely the reason.

While at the 50 yard stage I had a failure to extract. The case remained in the chamber after being fired, the extractor ripped a chunk off the rim trying to pull it out. It required pushing spent case out with rod to clear. This was at approx. round 350 of the morning.

Jim was eager to go to the pit (a place where various enemy objects are destroyed without prejudice) so off we went. Pics are posted at AR15.com in the Illinios section. Another 100+ rounds and three more identical failures to extract.

Speaking with those in the know the following has become clear. Shooting a new rifle without so much as running a patch down the barrel is not wise. This is a common problem with rounds out of spec, too long. The Bushmaster had no failures using the same ammo after we determined he had one bad mag. So ammo most likely is not the problem. I am leaning toward over lubed and very hot weapon. It was 96 in the shade and the gun was spraying lube while shooting. I think it was gunked up after 350+ rounds.

Next time I go I am setting up at 100 yards right away. I didn't get a chance to shoot at that range and I am curious to see how I will do. The EOTech is super cool but I still like shooting with the irons. My groups at 50 were small with the HOLO sight and opened a little with the irons. The Zen of rifle shooting is something I will appreciate for years to come.
