Range Rules & Etiquette

For matches that are shot forward of, or away from, a fixed firing line, it is customary to allow guns to be either bagged or holstered.

I don't know any or have ever seen any "serious competition shooters" who are spending time at public ranges inside corner guns stores.

Certainly true.

Smoking357, while you're a hoot and obviously enjoying yourself, please remember that we have a general "no bashing" rule here that says that USPSA types have to get along with IDPA guys, and both have to play nicely with the IMHSA and Bullseye shooters, when we can find one.

I know there aren't many bullseye shooters left in the world, but you don't have to wave the flag quite so hard. If we "practical/tactical" shooting types can show respect for your space pistols and suitcases full of archaic group-tightening gear, then you can be civil towards those of us who compete with the gear we wore to the range.

Cool?

Not terribly often. Those are remarks I've heard over several decades.

I could write a book based on things I've heard. Most recently, "You have to look at where you want the bullet to hit; if you look at the sights, you'll miss."
thats the way i shoot archery,
focus on the target, release when the pin comes to it, continue watching the target till after the arrow hits.

perhaps those people just don't understand the difference, it took me a bit to be able to switch between the two smoothly. ofcourse i'll shoot my bows like crazy for awhile then switch to shooting something that goes bang for awhile ;)

"You have to look at where you want the bullet to hit; if you look at the sights, you'll miss."

Definitely an odd statement taken on it's own.

I guess conversely one could say, "I never look at my target, I just look at my sights and holes magically start to appear in my target." (well I guess it was my target, I never really looked)

My range is non-regulated for the most part, ie no RO/SO calling range condition and looking for folks to throw out. The worst thing I ever see is a fellow come up to the range when it is obviously cold with folks downrange pasting/replacing targets. They pick a spot and start setting up their gear. Gun rests, sandbags, scopes, etc. At 100 yds it's hard to tell if they are handling a gun or not when you look back at the line. Our rules are, when the firing line is cold you either move back away from the line or downrange. Nobody is to be at the firing stations.

Indoor ranges with ill mannered people leave me cold, I don't use them unless I have to "test" the function of a weapon. The idea that strangers with loaded guns, are standing a foot away from me, shooting with little or no knowledge, of what the hell they are doing, just is too risky. I want either a private or nearly empty public, or outdoor range in order to be comfortable and enjoy my time there. And there is always some guy who brought his dumbass first date there so she could see what a man she is going out with. "he's more apt to shoot someone showing off" or some kid with a 44 mag that can't hit a barn door, shooting full power loads with a target 4 feet away. There ought to be a law, lol.

In the world, yes. That's why it's an Olympic event and has been for over a century. It's sad to experience the dumbing-down of America, where precision, discipline and excellence are eschewed.

Enough elitism, ok?

There are different types of competition. All are valid here. I've got a lot of respect for bullseye shooters. It's a definite skill and talent. So is action shooting. So is cowboy shooting, so is trapshooting, so is Norwegian Drive-By (oops, meant biathlon).

Whats your deal, midol not working today? Why come here just to argue?

HAHAHAHAH
hear hear.
i guess there's a range for everyone, from the upper echelon down to me and the rest of the bourgoisie.
in the back yard with the boys, we focus on the 4 rules and the standard range rules and line commands that keep us all safe, having fun, and honing our skills.
maybe someday we'll be fortunate enough to graduate to shooting firearms that don't fit a holster or hang from a sling.

Kind of like curling, but not as practical, and the equipment is harder to carry... :D

Naahhh...seriously, no reason for any of us to be snobs about the sports we choose. After all, we all undoubtedly gravitate toward our chosen disciplines because others were too slow, too fast, too inaccurate, too nit-picky, too long, too short, too impractical, too mundane...whatever.

It's all good, but you'll get along better (here and elsewhere) if you don't try to pee on anyone elses parade.

Curling would be good if you could shoot at those rocks as they go down the lane.

The range where I regularly go is a public outdoor range on public land. No Safety Officers, no Range Officers, no nothin'. 100 yards, 50 yards, and 25 yards. Each with two shooting tables. Verbal acknowledgements of "downrange" between everyone there is all your going to get. Let's just say I'm VERY situationally aware when I'm there. Lots of guns and lots of regular shooters around here, so for the most part, everyone's on the ball.

I was down there one day and witnessed a middle-aged couple on the 25 yard range shooting pistols. 25 yards was obviously too much for them, so they simply walked about 15 feet closer to the target and commenced to shooting. Now, there's about 30 yards bewteen each range, with a common lateral firing line, so the likelyhood of them being hit was pretty low. I was still pretty new to guns and safe weapons handling so I didn't think too much of it, other than it didn't seem like the smartest thing I'd ever seen.

If I saw that now, I'd simply leave. No point starting a fight while trying to correct them. **** and let natural selection work it's magic.
